Ward hasn't proven himself to be anything other than a 1 hit wonder.
Until the guy starts throwing down consistently good performances, I am just not sold on him.
He has regressed big time in recent years. I hope he can get back to his previous level, but who knows.

So what, conditions were bad, it wasn’t a true test. Kenya and Ethiopia being limited to 3 runners a piece means that the field was diluted.
People need to stop playing the woulda, coulda, shoulda game with US runners. These guys have safe contracts with great support from the shoe companies. They don’t need to take risks so they’re content to run a marathon after they’re no longer competitive on the track, run 100-120 mpw like they’re still training for the 5/10k, and compete once per year. Meanwhile guys like Rupp, Levins, and all the Kenyans and Ethiopians work harder and eat their lunch.

The dudes that won it didn't seem to mind the course or conditions. Not saying that I expect an American to go 2:05, but cmon. 2:12 is the dumbest low bar in the world right now.
I've lost count of the number of US men's marathoners who would run 2:10, 2:08, 2:08, 2:07, or 2:06 if they'd "just run on a flat, fast course like Berlin or London."
Until someone named Galen Rupp actually does go to Europe to run a flat, fast course, Ward can shut the hell up.
I think he's nice guy and way faster than I'll ever be, but...he's looking for attention which is why he mentioned Letsrun. Jared, like 99% of elite runners surely read the forums and some surely post. Jared knows that comment will garner many responses.
I think the top Americans ran decent races. The fact is it was very fair weather and they were around 2:10 flat pace at halfway (not positive, but close to that) as I was tracking them on the ap. To slow down that much with 4 of them in close proximity is a bit surprising that not one ran around 2:10 flat. (I've run NY and understand the 2nd half of the race).
Rudy Chapa ran just over 2:11 for his debut marathon in the wet rain of 1983. Because of how the race unfolded with Dixon and Smith, Rudy wasn't even mentioned. Tabb and Tuttle were both 2:10 plus, weren't even mentioned.
How did they train so differently---Chapa, Tuttle, Tabb, etc...? If I were Ward, I'd be talking to them (yes I'm serious) to see what they did. Biwott, Derrick, Fauble, Ward...are all capable of 2:10 flat, but they ran 2.5 to 3 minutes slower.
They've got to figure it out.
For the record, I'm not ripping on any of them. I've met 3 of them and they were all super nice guys and obviously talented and hard working, but something is surely missing. I get it, some days you just don't have it, but eventually you've got to have a solid day to verify that you've been training right.

Yes, I'm well aware of that and what he ran for 2 miles as well, but we are talking about the marathon. That was his first and only time he ran it and in conditions that were less favorable.
You can look up the Olympics for yourself as you and I know that already you have the answer. For the record, Rudy didn't run in the Marathon Olympic Trials but would have surely been a contender. He chose a different route in life and running.
The Olympics are one race every four years. You may be big on that and "it" defining someone's running career, but I'm not.
Did Tuttle and Tabb run 28:32 in high school? Nope. That was only Tuttle's 3rd marathon and he had ran 2:12+ 4 months earlier at Grandma's, so would expect him to break 2:11 in only his 3rd attempt?
Ward was 6th in Olympic Marathon because it's the Olympics and people race it far differently than Boston or New York. Tuttle was 2:10:41 in 1983 and even without being 6th in the 1984 Olympic Marathon, John would be rated a better marathoner in my book, but surely not yours.

Agree with you mostly. But it doesn't matter if Kenya and Ethiopia were limited to 3 guys each, because only one guy from each of those countries beat Ward.
