Surely some of you remember Douglass Wakiihuri ? After he trained in Japan and started running with their distinctive form, he won the 1987 World Championships, the Silver Medal in the 1988 Olympics and the London and NewYork Marathons.

That's how training works.
Your premise that the Japanese have bad technique is flawed. Rather Japanese elites have no better or worse form than ellites from any other nation.
How does Japanese training methods differ from the American, European and African?
Weak upper body and core. If you look at the video, the guys with more bicep muscles run closer to what you would describe as better running form. They just don't have the upper body strength to swing their arms in sync with their legs and aerobic power. But these guys are all light weight so they can get away with it. Not sure if better form would help. The NOP guy from Japan only got marginally faster since working w/ Salazar. Ok, he had a great Chicago marathon so maybe it does help.

Not necessarily saying is flawed but I was always amazed how many Japanese guys are flailing with their arms side-to-side towards the end of their marathons. Even my idol Yuki. Still, they are damn FAAAST. Respect!!!

Not sure if the COG is implicated, but Asians in general tend to have shorter legs compared to torso and achieve better efficiency by swinging the arms lower.

The Japs have very long torsos in proportion to their legs. They also run in very short quick strides (or very quick short strides).

These guys are kicking it in hard at the end of a half marathon. They have guts, and kicking matters, because there are so many of them. I'd cheer myself hoarse if I was there. #respect

Technique is irrelevant. If Americans had the same mindset and dedication as the Japs, they would blow them (and probably the EA's) out the water.

I had to wait ages to see a heel striker. I love the Japanese love for distance running, just the numbers is impressive. Pelvis maybe over-rated, Yifter, Cheruiyot and some of the 1980s marathoners 'sat.' Their arms were everywhere because they were giving it everything.
