Nope. Kipchoge gets WR and wins Tokyo, he's the best ever.

But the WR remains Mutai at NYC.

Is there a legal way for me to watch last year's race? One of the reasons why I don't subscribe to NBC Sports Gold is because they don't keep archives except the current calendar year. If they did; I would probably buy it.

If Eliud truly cares about setting the WR he’ll instruct the rabbits to go out at, like, 2:02:30 pace and just follow them. Not the preposterously suicidal pacemaking that has derailed his last couple attempts.

Setting a WR and winning in Tokyo would put greatest marathoner of all time out of reach for awhile. Note that only kipsang has an Olympic medal in the marathon (bronze) of your listed men. Kipchoge also has a significantly faster top 5 times over the distance than any of your listed men, even with breaking2 not factored in.

I would bet Kipchoge over Kimetto 9 times out of 10. You are confusing the the best single performance -- the world record -- with being the best athlete. Just because Kimetto got it right ONCE, and his time bettered every other performers, doesn't mean Kimetto is the best athlete. If I beat you in a mile 9 times out of 10, but your PR is 3:59 while mine is 4:00, are you honestly going to claim to be the better athlete?

I partially second what you say.

Still, he's managing his races/career very cautiously so i give him another full season to try breaking the WR. After that he will slowly start to decline. In any case his unmatched consistency makes him the marathon goat, only lrc trolls can doubt that.

Although I would imagine we won't see a mad hatter Galen Rupp type performance from Kipchoge, does anyone know whether Kipchoge is still using that Maurten drink. Has anyone tried it? I imagine there are some pretty fantastic current substances to give that extra boost, although there would be something fitting about setting the current WR on some old school dope like a bit of added Amphetamine (ala the Tour de France from 100 years ago) or some good old cocaine infused Coke, I imagine that some exogenous ketone or some cutting edge special sauce will carry the day. I know that I am always suspicious as to what is really in those bottles, especially when, as may likely happen this weekend, Kipchoge starts flying at the end with the final 5K at sub 4:30 pace. Seriously, does doping control ever test what the elites have in their special bottles? I think Kipchoge will get the record, and I really like his simple approach to training, but I know that I am going to have doubts as to how it was accomplished.

Either there's an illegal substance in the bottle and the athlete will be caught in a doping test, or there's nothing illegal in the bottle and the athlete is clean. There's no need to test twice when the result will be the same.

I most certainly am.

Just checked TV Guide's listings for early Sunday morning, and it shows NBCSN broadcasting Berlin. If that's part of your cable package, you shouldn't need NBC Sports Gold.

If you don't have cable, Fubo TV has a free 7 day trial and they carry NBCSN. Fubo is great because there's a built-in DVR function, so you can set it to record and watch it when you wake up Sunday morning, rather than staying up all night. Really high quality streams too, just remember to cancel before the 7 days is up!

Why is Berlin earlier than usual this year? Not that it would make a difference for the weather, it looks like next weekend might be even hotter than this weekend.
