This actually is a great post.

The biggest thing going against it is one was in June in an off year with nothing on the line and on is in August. Get backto me when Jakob beats Chelimo in a 5k. He already owns Centro in the 1500.

I'm sorry brojos, I only read half of your reply before I was cast into a heathing fit of rage. I'll manage my emotions better before I post next time. With that said, I'd take Jakob's career over Wheating, but so far Wheating was the better runner.

What times did Wheating run when he was 17

I've just looked up if Wheating won any Championships, I've barely heard of the Pan Am, Europeans are far more prestigious.

Wheating did one fast time and f all outside America - comparatively speaking.

He didn’t run any times at 17 considering his first time competing in track and field was his senior year when he was 18.

i'm being very careful to not get on any hype train on this topic.

wheating's PB is 0.28 seconds faster and his next best time in his career was 3:34. He PR'd by 7 seconds that day - fluke-like. Obviously a huge outlier he was unable to replicate again despite having years to try. Wheating's best career times happen in a week span. Jakob seems to be on an upward trajectory.

The Olympics, yes, that is hard to argue against. Wheating made it twice. Jakob was 15 during the last olympics and has the 2020 Olympics to qualify for which will be the test. He might do well in the world championships next yr too...

Lol well one was in mid-August and the other was in freaking June TWO MONTHS AGO... and the Brojos think this is a good post...

Oh wow you about to get owned. Chelimo ran his SB in MAY... Hasn't improved since.

You know what else happened in May, a week before that? Chelimo (and Centro) got dusted by Jakob over 1500m - 3:39 to 3:40 at Payton Jordan Invitational.

It is not only that the USA meet was in June. It was in Des Moines, which is surely not the place to run fast in June as a distance runner. However, in relation to the thread topic, it is entirely possible that Jakob will run his all time personal bests as a teenager. Much stranger things have happened.

Well, Centro never had his 2 brothers blocking for him for the last 1.5 laps.

If you've been following Centro's season closely, he was obviously peaking for July/August, although since he pulled out of Birmingham, and just posted an Instagram story in DC, he is probably slightly injured and shutting it down. He ran his 3rd fastest time ever in July. He's a lock for the next three national teams (in my book) barring another couple of years like this he's had. It's too early to tell what will happen there.

Back to Chelimo, if you legitimately believe Jakob beating him at a distance he does not compete in global championships in means he is a better runner, you are smoking some GOOD kush. I'd love to try some. But until Jakob is an Olympic silver medalist to one of the most dominant distance runners in history, he is not better than Chelimo. Not on your life. Chelimo's silver medal is a bigger accomplishment than everything Jakob has ever achieved in running.

No, not really. The 1500 is a premier event. 5000 is a rung below. Jakob is a much better 1500 runner than Chelimo already.

1500m is not Chelimo's distance. He was a 5k/10k guy in college and even posted videos of himself steepling on social media this year. Jakob is not as good a runner and being better at 1500 in an early season race does not make him objectively better, especially considering it wasn't very fast. Chelimo has two world/Olympics medals, Jakob couldn't even win the double world juniors. I respect the hell out of both of them but it is obvious who is better right now.

Murphy has a faster 800 than Wheating.

Centro has a faster 1500 than Wheating

Both are Olympic medalists.

Before Jakob, the 17 year old, even hit his 3:31 @ U20s, he was beating Centro & Murphy at the Pre mile this year.

Wheating doesn't have credentials to even be among the best from the U.S.

Jim Ryun and Alan Webb are the standards you should be comparing Jakob to.

Jakob is already a legend in World athletics.

The whole world knew of Ryun and Webb.

No one in the U.S. knows who Wheating is, let alone the world.
