RANDY FUCKIN' DALZELL!
RANDY FUCKIN' DALZELL!
Tom Woodall at Eastern Illinois in the late 60's through the early 80's. Coached Eastern to the d2 national title in 1977 with a meet record low of 34 points which still stands today i believe. He never ran competitevely. Was a recreational runner. He was a exercise physiologist.
Coach Walker at ETSU.....former boxer.
I believe it was Seamus Power that found out the hard way one day at practice too....
Jack Daniels was a Modern Pentathlete so while his sport involved running, he never was technically a runner. Lydiard took up recreational running in his later years and actually got pretty fast, but was not what most of us consider to have grown up in the sport.
Not the most impressive resume, but my high school coach was a football/baseball player in HS and on the football team at Tennessee before he became a microbiologist.
Our school records that he coached include 4:10, 9:17, and 9:3x (3K steeple). He's had guys at 48.x, 1:54 (but neither school records), and multiple all-american jumpers whose farthest jumps I can't remember. I also attended a small public school (less than 200 per grade) that didn't lose a league meet of any form for 29 years and track was never the most popular team sport in the spring.
He was never a runner and still doesn't run nor will ever take up running. He does like to golf, for whatever that's worth.
His volunteer assistant coach (who started our track team in 46) was a decathlete whose best events were the jumps and the throws (but still managed to coach a HSR in the 400H, 1:54s, and a slew of 9:30-9:40 types during the 60s despite never being a distance runner himself). He also coached a guy named Vin Lanana, who, while decent, was never an exceptional runner by any means.
So Lanana was himself a runner but nothing like those he has sinced coached (Olympians like Kempanien (sp), Jennings, Hauser, Stember, guys like Dobson, Sage, etc).
Sully ran for Warhurst, but did Warhust ever run?
My hs coach has won 5 XC state Champiosnhips in the last 8 years, has been 2nd 5 times, and hasnt finished out of the top 3 in the last 10 years. Just won the State track Championship, with a guy in the mile at 4:20, a different guy at 9:20, and four other guys on the 4x800 relay that ran 8:02. Has had 10 guys in the last 10 years run 4.20 or less, had likly 50 guys under 4.30.
Has done all this with an avg roster of 25 distance runners per year.
weighs 230+ pounds and has never run over a mile in his life. Was a scholarship football player at Ole Miss.
Oh yah, he has also coached over 10 guys that have jumped over 14' in PV, State Record holder at 16'. Has had about 10 other state champs in the Shot and Discus.
Like I said best coach in the country!
Gags who?
I saw Gag's running a couple of times...but he was a Javelin thrower and Football QB..
everybody's favorite "hurdle guru" at Miss St never ran either.......was a student assistant at Troy
