It’s a common misconception to think someone is a pro because they are under contract. Most runners in this category are nothing more than paid amateurs. Kerr raced like an amateur at NCAAs. He’s still young enough to evolve into a legitimate professional, but I wouldn’t bet on him based on that one single race because a professional is always professional, not only when it’s convenient.

He seems to me to be a likely member of a UK Olympic team. He is a talent. Likely needs to race more, and learn how to do so. Olympic and World Champ racing require navigating difficult heats. That is a different ball of wax than time trialing in Europe. It would be interesting with that big frame how we adapts to the championship events - he has the talent to be there.

As far as the Indoor DMR, I remember watching him closely and clearly he was ill and not mailing it in. He was really labored in his breathing 400 meters into his leg. If he was faking it, well, it was a fantastic acting job. I was impressed he bounced back the next day.

This is the dumbest thing I have read on LRC today. It is like saying Mike Tyson wasn't a professional boxer because he bit off Holyfield's ear in the ring. Professional thing to do, no, professional boxer yes.

Why do you say this? This is the King Cheserek slayer. This the collegiate record holder. If he were american, I'd give him something similar to what Andrew got coming out of college.

Agreed. I hate when people try to redefine words. Definition of professional is "engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime." So maybe people don't think he will be competitive but he can get last place in every race and still be a professional.

Kerr is a great sign and with Ribich, their sb's are better than Murphy and Centro this year.

Since Centro is now washed up, and his Rio performance was weaker than anything since 1918, I'd say Brooks is looking at least equal to NOPer this season.

Plus, once AlSal & Co go down, even Sketchers will be better than NOPer Dopers.

I don't agree. A great Scottish mid-d runner who will run nationally for GB is worth as much as an American.

It's a common misconception that if you just keep insisting that a wrong idea is correct it becomes so. . He can no longer compete in the NCAA because he's no longer an amateur.

This is a one trick pony. How much hype will this guy garner for the other 10 months a year?

These signings make me wonder if Amy-Eloise Neale will stay in Washington and try to sign with Brooks instead of looking elsewhere. Brooks does seem to be making an effort to be taken more seriously with these signings, probably aided by Windle's indoor world silver

Y'all are butthurt because you can't understand the word professional means more than one thing? Yes, Josh Kerr has signed a contract and therefore technically IS a professional, but at the NCAA champs, the only race I've ever seen him run in, he did not conduct himself like a professional.

There is little indication that Kerr will run faster. He's broken 1:50 twice in his career as far as I can tell, runningn his 800 PR of 1:48.02 in 2017, which indicates about 3:36 potential, although living at altitude it makes sense he would be able to slightly dip under that mark with his 3:35.01. Keep in mind Azusa is one of the fastest tracks in the US, which is why there is little wonder that 3 of his 6 sub-4 mile or equivalent races have come there. Take away Azusa and he's never broken 4:00 outdoors.

I'm not seeing the upside here. He's about a 1:48-1:51 800 guy on any given day and has broken 3:36 twice on an exceptionally fast track. Looks like he's not yet 21, so I'll admit he should have another 3 years of potential development. Is 1:48 enough speed as a pro?

A 1:48 leaves me doubtful. But I think he probably still has some time to shave off his 800 PR since now he no longer has to train for cross in addition to track. So he might be able to shave off a second or two. It's a huge question though since it depends on how much true speed work he does
