fastest mile in high school competition ever ?

National meets vs a state meet.

Maybe the search should be for any state meets (or conference meets) that were faster than the Cali 1974 meet

IIRC Rich Kimball's most notable result was a win in the Under 20 world xc, 1974. In addition to his mile time(s) he also ran ~8:46 that year.

Kimball went to Oregon State and all I read about him was that had mono his year there.. He transferred to San Jose and the best he managed was 3:47 for 1500m. The last I heard was that he was a sheriff deputy in El Dorado Hills, CA. The Mastalir twins lived up there and would often run with him.

More impressive to me: The previous year, a few weeks past his 17th birthday, he ran 3:39.0 for 1500. At the time, that made him the 10th fastest ever. Nowadays you'd have to break 3:29.

And the 3:39 came less than two years after he went out for cross country as a high school sophomore and first started systematic training. His first timed mile, that fall: 5:38 or 5:36 IIRC.

He was a freak. In 1967 he was unbelievable. His 1500 and mile records that year were incredible, coming as they did after an already phenomenal year in '66. But after he contracted mono early in '68 he never reached that level again. A prodigy who peaked early.

I was searching for something else and came across this old reply.... you are correct. This is what I can gather for the two Tom Smiths.

Tom Smith #1, Granada Hills HS '74, went to San Diego State '78? I only see marks for him for a 1977 season, with best known marks of 3:48.60 (or 3:48.6h) and 4:09.0h. He very well may have gone faster. His best mile time in HS is a 4:10.6h for 7th in the '74 HS State meet.

Tom Smith #2, Mission San Jose HS '76, went to Colorado '80-xc, and was USA sub-4 miler #98 with a 3:58.3h (possible a 3:58.XX FAT that was rounded to tenths) in 1979. He eventually ran PR's of 3:38.8h, and 3:54.65. He had at least 16 in/outdoor track sub-4's in his career. The fastest HS mile I saw for him is a 4:17.7h at the HS state prelims, but he very well may have better marks.

Conrad Suhr went to UCLA and ran 146.XX in the 880.
