I've been doing a lot of research on running form lately and it's recently clicked for me that the "butt kicker" drill is practically worthless. You're basically forcing your hamstring to be active and pull your heel up when in reality during the gait cycle it should be passive and move due to the stretch reflex from extending the hip.
Are there any other drills that are common place in dynamic warm ups that basically train us the wrong way?
Most people do butt kicks wrong. If you do them correctly, they look almost exactly like high knees. You should be driving your knee upward, but just putting a little bit more emphasis on snapping your heal up toward your butt during the process.
