i go to arcadia HS rn and im on the XC team and we really suck like bad, we didnt even make it to state because we got a new coach this year and he has some weird training.
Those in CA would remember Jesuit high school was once a powerhouse (they make Arcadia’s short dynasty look pathetic). There’s some crazy stats about the school and they litter the all time lists.. Then the coach retired and nobody has heard of them for a while.
Other schools had dynasties as well until the coach leaves. Coaching really does make a difference!
Well… I’ll tell you what. Jesuit is becoming a powerhouse again.

How did the only boys team to win NXN twice go to a team unable to make State?
Same thing that happened to Newbury Park and Great Oak. The coaches left and the programs dropped off the face of the earth
I’m sure the coach makes a difference, but for NP, they don’t have anywhere near the talent they did when Brosnan was there. During his hey days, they had 11 boys on the team at one time that were sub 5:00 1600 runners in middle school. This year they had two.

The coach can play a major role in the buy in, but when you have big feeder programs like at Newbury or Great Oak, sometimes those incoming kids choose to go somewhere else. It's a chicken or egg problem.

And NP was on the podium last fall in the CA State Meet. You are so dramatic.
Thats the point. They always have a good year after because its kids from the old coaches mentality are still there. After that a cliff jump happens. Newberry Park had no state qualifiers in Track. It’s over for them and Great Oak held on for a year and now they jump off the cliff is happening. HS coaches are So important to the success in HS is crazy. That why kids parents move to be with a better programs it’s worth it

Most don’t understand the importance of a great coach. They think it’s talent , they get the good kids, their school has 4000 students, they just got lucky. This is usually what the coach’s on the other side of winning say. Loudoun Valley, Newbury Park , Great Oak and Arcadia are all the same. The coaches left and the programs took a turn for the worse. It’s not complicated to see or understand. I don’t see Arcadia getting back anytime soon

Newbury was a bit different. They had a flood of really good middle school kids (including the Sahlmans and Youngs) come at the same time. They didn't come because of the coach as the team wasn't that good yet until they all got there. 11 boys under 5:00, several into the 4:40's is an extraordinary amount of really good kids to have on a roster of a high school team. Of course good coaching helps and as so many have pointed out, it was a perfect storm of really talented kids, a solid driven coach and incredible parental support, created the greatest XC team in high school history.
HS sports have an impact. Every now and then HS sports have greatness. I drive my kids almost 8 houses to Huntsville AL from Charlotte NC to see the Newbury Park team run in 2021. That was a truly special time for our sport and my family. Im sure if my kids were older enough to run during the Arcadia era we would have drove to see them. I have been following track for 30 years now and can appreciate teams and coaches such as Arcadia

And Loudoun Valley is different too. In 2017, two of the NXN scorers were transfers. In 2018, they had 4 transfers at NXN (3 that scored). They also had a junior who moved from Alaska before freshman year (not sure if this one counts as a transfer).

This is the same story I heard about Loudoun Valley and Great Oak. It’s just sour grapes from other coaches. Many coaches get sub 5min kids and can’t do Jack Sh!t with them. The main reason for Newbury Park, Great Oak and Loudoun Valley‘s success is not getting lucky with talent but the coach’s exceptional ability to coach and mentor these athletes. Every school has talent over the years but very very few reach the greatness of these school did

Every school has 11 kids show up at the first practice who have already run sub 5:00 in middle school? I highly doubt that.
I buy every school has talent, but there are exceptional situations, like NP. Find me another that has ever had that many sub 5:00 middle schoolers at one time. If it’s every happened before, it is at least a very rare occurrence.

No one ever developed development athletes the way the NP coach did. It’s never been seen
They changed the spot. True Pioneers and coaching greatness

OK, fair. However, will you at least admit they had a massive advantage with all the talent they started with? It doesn't mean the coach didn't do a good job.
