OldFat/FitVigilante, from '80 (when I started at ASC) till '88 (when I last trained with the team), we did 6x mile during the season. It's true, late in the year we went to the Dunes/Mosca Pass and also did hill repeats at Ft. Garland. In the early '80's, Vigil also had us run an all-out workout on the treadmill twice/week for a couple of weeks.... Also, we did 3 weeks of two mile time trials....OFitV is right, "The weeks before the mile we did a 2mile all out followed by 3 x 1mile. Next week, 2mile all out then 2x1mile. Second to the last week, 2mile all out followed by 1mile all out. Final week - 1mile all out. " You know that 'Pops' ,sadly, has passed on.

Rabbit Run?
....the rabbit run(or Indian file run- politically incorrect??): single file, and the last runner in the line surges to the front. Once there, the runner that is now in last surges to the front, etc.
OldFat/FitVigilantes, when did you guys run at Adams?????
I went to Adams Fall '86 to Spring '91.
I ran for Adams Fall '86 to Fall '88.
There's a guy on eBay (the one who had the Viren DVDs up) who'll convert VHS to DVD: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZrunningtothetop
OldFat/FitVigilantes, e-mail me so I can contact you guys when we have another ASC reunion. thanks!
Check out the link below for a DVD of the 84-86 World XC meets.
Thanks for all of the info, does anyone know what type of weight training he did or how much?
Considering his build, probably low-weight, high-rep stuff. Since he's pictured in Coe & Martin's book lifting weights, the recommendations in there are probably very close to what Porter did.
didn't Pat Porter play Lasse Viren in Without Limits?
Yes
OldFit and OldFat, please tell us some war stories! I ran with the University of Southern Colorado in the late 80s. We did conference on our course one year and the Adams guys didn't place out of the top 10. Our best guy, the best guy I have ever run with, Mike Sandoval ran a PR for two miles over the first two miles and he couldn't beat their worst guy. Who did you run with that impressed you most? And why? Any cool race stories?
I was only out there one year but would have loved to work at the Campus Cafe. Instead, I worked at a choke and puke restaurant on the other side of town. (This was during the summer before my freshman year). Needless to say, I got food poisoning from some rotten green chile and was out of commission for a few days.
Never had one of the big cinnamon rolls because they were always out by the time I got there.
I was so far back in the pack that we did about 70% of what the top runners did. The only workout we did the same was the 14-16 700's in the park on thursdays. Vigil was great in that he let anybody train with the team unlike some D1 programs.
Does anyone know what Pat is doing these days? To you guys who know him, did it surprise you that he didn't move up the the marathon?
I haven't seen Pat since 1991. I had heard that he was married and living New Mexico. And I had heard something about him running a marathon... but I am not sure if it was true.
It looks like Colorado Stats might still live in the Valley, he might know.

He lives in Albuquerque with his wife Trish and two kids and works in management for Centex Homes(or one of the main builders). He doesn't run anymore. I was a teammate of Pat's and he hated long runs. Often times, when he hit the pre-planned 2 hour mark of his long run, he would stop running and walk home from that point. He tried one marathon (Twin Cities) and dropped out. I've never seen anyone train as hard and consistently as Porter though. Talk about dedication and focus- never a bad race, never a bad workout. Most people don't realize that he was a very good mountain runner/racer. He was very tough on the climb at Rock Creek, and won the Mt. Evans Hill climb (highest road race in the world- 14,200+') and Pikes Peak. This might have translated over to a good marathon performance. With Porter nothing would have surprised me.
Porter played Lasse Viren in the Pre Movie "Without Limits" in 1998 for the runnin scenes. He was looking pretty fit then.

I would gladly pay for a decent DVD of as many of Porter's races as you can get together.

I had to say something, Pat is living in Albuquerque and doing very well. Yes two kids, wife, etc... Great family. He sells homes in Alb./Rio Rancho. I think he runs a little, but probably because he gained some weight when he stopped running. Pretty recreational now. I think his drive changed from intense running to intense home selling. He is doing quite well and ready to build an amazing home in the foothills. Great guy.
