What's with the normies who go down to their local HS track just to walk laps?

So? Then we run elsewhere?? Maybe in San Diego we stop being and feeling entitled. Running is one percentage of life So is a clock So is a trail So is any iota of fitness. We are not gods or gurus because we run. We find other flat spots.

I haven't been on a track in a few years unless it was at the end of a roadrace. I run on the school cross country course that goes by the track and never have the urge to go run on it.

I have to wonder at the lady walking around the track talking on her cell phone without a handsfree device. It's obvious that it's inconvenient holding the phone up to her ear for an hour.

This drives me UP THE FU#!$NG WALL, it's one of the most annoying things I've ever seen; sure it's not a big deal and it's trivial but why on earth would someone not want to walk in a park or a trail and instead go to the track. You project a lot of assumptions that aren't relevant to the argument one iota. A king? Lol. If a king is someone who calls you out on your BS, then yeah call me a king. Equal rights on the track? I don't disagree. Like everything in life though, you have to do things with respect or courtesy.

Pretty simple courtesy applies to the track. Stay out of lane 1 if you're warming up or acting like an airhead. I doubt you go to the track at all. You only take running seriously when there's something to get offended about :)

FormerD1 opened up a market for SS to be a successful troll by acting as his foil. The pendulum has swung the other way.

I still dont think the question has really been answered other than they want to measure the distance they walk (even though everyone has a phone on them that will do this).

I doubt safety is an issue. Sidewalks are pretty safe.

I think it's the same mindset as going to the gym.

Most people that go to a gym to workout don't workout any harder than they could at home with dumbells and a medicine ball but they feel more accomplished (and free of excess money) if they go to a gym.

The track is their gym experience even if there is no logical reason to walk there.

I would guess that simple ignorance of track etiquette is the problem, here, as has been mentioned. I don't think anyone walks in lane 1 out of spite to irritate runners (okay, maybe some people).

I would bet that if they simply put up a sign saying to stay clear of lane 1 unless you are running, the problem would be solved, other than people who don't read English.

1. Can walk at the same tempo without ever breaking pace (more relaxing)

2. Easier to supervise children (also safer)

3. No curbs or hills, steps, or crosswalks (aka easier for elderly and strollers)

4. Consistant sun exposure for those wanting sun shine

5. You do not have to deal with cars or bikes

6. Easier to walk 3 and 4 wide and carry on a conversation with your old pals

Where I live:

1) most neighborhoods are busy and not pedestrian friendly

2) I mostly see the walkers on the track in the winter, when it gets dark early, but the soccer team has the lights on until about 830pm

3) while there are about 25 to 30 walkers on any given night, we (the track coaches) have consistently told them they need to stay out of the way of runners or they will find the gates locked during soccer/offseason track practice. So they almost all are aware of and polite towards the runners trying to do repeats on the inside

4) we tell our runners that while they are jogging (recovery, warmup, cool down), dont insist on the inside lane, weave through the joggers, it isnt that hard when you're going 95 to 120 second laps, and it gives you the moral high ground to shout "track" during your actual repeats.

Where are you that this is an actual issue? Our school's soccer kids are worse at staying out of the track kids' way than the joggers.

Pretty sure Kenenisa Bekele doesn't have this problem. I'd build my own mondo track if I could afford it and would only let appropriately attired women with acceptable VO2max levels use it.
