I don’t get all of the hate about Magness... he puts a lot of useful and free info out there. Its more comprehensive than what a high schooler would get from all but a handful of programs in any given state.
As far as his achievements as a coach, I think in general coaches are given too much credit for being ‘masterminds’ . There biggest contribution is being an objective pair of eyes that can adapt the training as needed and provide emotional/psychological support. They’re managers not magicians. Salazar largely failed to develop anyone until he got Rupp/farah/centro... Renato tried to transform national class Americans into elites but nothing really came of it.
Anyways, Re: buying his course, I’d say listen to his podcast first. I find it unlistenable. I appreciate his blog/website though.
i don't think many people hate him (although some do). I just think a lot of people call BS on his antics. Have you ever met someone who acts like they are better than you? That's the way Magness comes off to a lot of people.
I think his book and his blog and this training class are just money making schemes. I don't think he really cares that much about educating people. He's just hyping himself up and trying to sell stuff.
Someone else in this topic said he needs to be quiet and focus on his coaching and I think that is a fair criticism. I think he's annoying but I don't hate him - and I would never suggest buying his book or his class.
Love him or hate him, Magness gives away more training and coaching information than any other coach who has coached any elites. Search his blog and you get hundreds of articles and training plans, Listen to him and Jon Marcus talk about every topic imaginable for free. He gives away so much info, and has for years. Hell, I have a full training season of some guy he coached to 3:56 in the mile, simply because I asked.
Is he the world's best coach? No. But tell me where else I can go to find someone who is willing to share so much about actual pro athletes like Natasha Rodgers? We complain when coaches don't provide information and then we complain when coaches actually share. Is it any wonder that most coaches don't bother putting any information out there. Is it worth the hassle?
If you disagree with him, don't buy anything he sells, argue your points, but at least the information is available and out there.
