Didn't watch this race and the OP assertion could be correct or not. Question is, did the pace pick up between half and 30K when Bett jumped to the lead to pace? If so, then Bett's job was to "disturb" the race and course panic among those likely to win the race in that they are forced to speed up earlier than at 30K when racing normally start. With Rupp with full knowledge of what Bett was doing, drafted a little back saving himself energy which he would use later after the 30K. Bett therefore helped "destroy" and get rid of Rupp's opponents. Only Abel Kirui, an experienced championship racer survived better than the rest of them.

On a day where the weather was fine for running fast, only 4 or 5 guys could negative split off of a 65:50 first half? That's a joke.
It initially was full of guys who haven't run well in years and was so bad they got busted by letsrun and had to add in a few B-rate Kenyans to make it look legit. But big guns except Kirui and Rupp did nothing. Kimetto DNF and hasn't run well since 2015, Biwott has now DNFd his last 3 marathons. Who else?

I think a point could be made: Chicago is no longer a major marathon for men based on: (1) uncertain weather (weak reason) (2) no pacers (3) inability to assemble strong men's fields.
This isn't Rupp scheming or his fault personally! He's not fast enough to have that influence. They can't control the entire world marathon attendance! Berlin is better and nearby schedule-wise. So is NYC. CIM is in December and the championship race, so Chicago just isn't what it used to be.
The women ran really fast, so it wasn't only weather or the course
It just doesn't bring the boys to the yard anymore. Maybe so close to the Berlin (fast) and NYC which has a higher payout?

In general, for followers of both sports and politics, reports leaked by hackers don't have as much traction these days as they did a year ago, and for good reason. Do think that's why Rupp won? No. Rupp was winning this baby no matter what happened. Before the race, I said the win odds on Rupp were shockingly low. "Crazy good odds" is what I said of the 15/2 odds.
We thought he should be one of the top betting favorites, maybe the favorite, instead of the #4 choice.
But for some reason, if I make a post that questions the greatness of the NOP or Rupp in the slightest, I'm viewed as Rupp hating fool.
Oh and let me support Rupp some more. The OP's post is wrong. He or she must have read our recap before Chicago changed the halfway splits. Rupp was one of 8 guys to negative split the race. He ran the final 5 miles all under 4:40.
So the idoits that bet think Rupp was only fourth best but the MORONS who post here think there was no competition and was set up for an easy win.
If you actually watched the race, Rupp was jogging along behind the top 4 or 5 guys the whole race until he took off. He certainly didnt need a personal pacer.
If he really wanted a personal pacer to jog behind, he would have called up Meb.
