13.9 100m was all Kawauchi was motivated to run. I'd like to hear the entire story. Before the 100m sprints, what were his most recent runs or workouts? Did Kawauchi do said sprints immediately after a 50:00 ten mile run? If Kawauchi were well rested; if Kawauchi were asked to sprint on a 4x100m relay and had teammates counting on him, he'd sprint faster.
How fast do you guys think elite women marathoners can run a 100m in? How fast can Jordan Hasay go?

It is false.
A persons ability to run 26.2 miles fast is simply a function (in order of importance): 1) fitness, 2) sprint speed 3) durability 4) weight.
There is simply no way to get near the top of the heap without very strong abilities in each of these areas.
There are more fat people that are capable of running sun 2:10 marathons than there are slow Sprinters. (Neither exists).
If Jordan Hasay were rested, pumped up and sprinting for teammates, I'd say, 14.25 FAT100m or better. Hasay is a 2:08.32 800m athlete. She's right around a 59 or 60 400m athlete, I am sure.
There are lots of stupid urban sports legends. The 7 ft basketball player that can run the 4:30 mile. The football lineman that can do 100 pull ups.
The "super slow sprinting elite distance runner" is unique amongst these legends.
Most urban sport legends are created by fans of a sport who want to turn their sports heroes into super heroes.
Occasionally, the fans of one sport will create legends to denigrate the heroes of another sport.
What is unique about the "super slow sprinting elite distance runner" legend is that it is often distance runners themselves creating this legend.
When the legend of the "super slow sprinting elite distance runner" is used by distance runners it probably has two intentions:
1) It is meant to show that the runner is "all guts" or "an aerobic monster." This is meant to make the athlete look "tough" because it partial denies what would be the very obvious natural speed and replaces it with "grit."
2) The "What me Play Basketball" maneuver where you try to conceal your rather obvious talent so as to surprise others with it later.
"I am a slow sprinter don't worry if I am with you at the end. I definitely can't run a 50 second last lap."
45 year old masters runners, who train hard, but who can still only run 2:55 marathons, (whose limiting factor factor IS speed) - they can run 13.9 100m.
That guy might be slow. I say he could run 12 flat.

This is the weakness in the 13.9 belief. Any 2:08 runner can go sub 2 and you can't do that off 13.9.

I think it would be more akin to asking "what is the 10k time I need to run 100 miles in less than 12 hours." I would expect a similar level of correlation.
Kawauchi probably could do a faster 100m after 10-15 mile run than after a short, sprinters warm up. Ingrid Kristiansen comes in mind as an example of a runner without sprint speed, but still running WR's from 5k to marathon. Not too shabby 3k either, 8:34 (17.13 per 100m). Paula Radcliffe another example, Carlos Lopes, Alberto Salazar...

100m speed is not really easily estimable for endurance guys, nor is it really worth considering M guys because variability of courses
best i can offer is 400 speed for elite 10k guys & you have to make up your own 100m speed from there

experience tells me the archetypal 27-flat guy woud have ~ 52/53 speed, albeit 54 is just about viable
55 let alone 56 speed i do not believe are possible from which to run 27-flat
you can use whatever method you like to estimate 100m speed for 52/53...
Lots of posts yet no one answered Rojo's question about the translation, so I will. Kawauchi didn't say anything about a running start, that's a Google translation error. He just said that he ran in spikes and ran 13.9 both times. I'm just guessing, but since he compared it to the high school times, my guess is that he did it from a standing start (which is more plausible for a 13.9). But there's nothing in the quote about how he started.

This makes sense. Most distance runners (and marathoners especially) have almost no explosive power and so the problem is acceleration and getting up to speed. You're crazy if you think a 2:08 guy can't run under 13.9 for 100m.
When Mo did his superstars 100m he was 12.9 which is 51.6 for 400m. He's definitely closed the last 200m of some of his races in 25.5ish so is actually speed is very good, he just has no acceleration.
Farah was 13 seconds, in spikes from a gun and blocks, all-out. I have always had my doubts about the timing of that race because of a huge boxer or something who went something like 11.3 or faster. No way that was possible. The times were made better for publicity reasons.
Farah was probably 13.5, which is great. Kawauchi at 13.9 makes sense, because he has never needed to develop any sort of kick.
Why people on here try to make sprints sound easy is beyond me. Those guys are really fast! In school I used to do some accelerations with them while warming up, they would clap for the start. I would hear the clap, look up, and they were already ten meters down the track!
There is a SG thread somewhere where he goes into detail about the timing, they never said how they timed it or who operated the timing system. The only thing I remember is that he challenged everyone to get in a 100m race and see what they could actually do.
So I did it! With a good tailwind I went 13.63, FAT, in spikes. And I'm in good shape, 5 years out of college. A bunch of super-young kids beat me.
I'm pretty sure sprinters and born and not made. My performances really improved with training, but I don't know if the same is true for sprinters. I doubt it.
Anyway, there's no zen to sprinting either. They can have it.
