Does anyone think the enhanced emphasize on wheelchairs is hurting the quality of the NY field for elite runners? I wonder if they had an "elite athlete + prize money" budget that basically has remained constant but since the wheelchair stuff is up - that would mean that the runners get a smaller percentage of that. It surprises me that there is one press release for the runners and wheelchair athletes. The wheelchair athletes are inspirational but they are a tiny percentage of the race. Last year, there were 49 wheelchair finishers and 49,000+ runners so wheelchair racers represented .01%. Yet about 30% of the press release is devoted to them? That makes no sense. My fears that marathons are turning into nothing more than than charity/inspire/fitness runs grows larger each passing year.

). I think it's natural to see a drop off this fall and instead of complaining you could be hyping some solid matchups that we do get to watch,

I love that you did not address your comparison to men's and women's basketball teams as they do not share a budget like they do in a major marathon. I think it was simply being called out that you would, of course, overlook the depth of the women's field and jump straight to analyzing the men's. You also don't have to be so sour about the wheelchair racers. Just because NYC is choosing to highlight one group and not another should not be a cause for concern. Folks in wheelchairs have enough to deal with without you going off on them for getting some attention.

How much do people, including those of us on LRC care about the elite field at NYC? This thread has 22 posts. A recent thread on Donald Trump? Almost 12,000 posts. While I'm being somewhat sarcastic, it also proves my point. There isn't even enough people on what is quite possibly the most prominent running site in the US that care about an "elite" field at a "major" marathon to sustain a thread on the topic!!!

Nobody should be paying any attention to a field of drugged up Kenyans/Ethipoians pimped by their corrupt coaches and managers. It's a disgrace that this website is giving them any sort of attention in the first place as it makes them part of the doping problem. It's also a disgrace that NYC marathon organizers keep on putting together elite fields like this - they are also part of the problem.

The wheelchair athletes are simply much more inspiring as they are overcoming horrible adversity in life. I would like to see the organizers and this website giving much more attention to these athletes.

Probably because this website focuses more on hate filled, click baiting threads, rather than promote good matchups in the sport. Folks know they can come here to discuss politics with running on the side.

It doesn't help when major marathon fields get released and all the site does is complain about them.

Guess I should resign myself to obstacle runs, color runs, mud runs, Zombie 5ks and non-competitive charity events.
