There is a big difference between leading the whole way, in which someone or a pack of someones might be right on your shoulder, and soloing a race in which you gap the field on the first lap and run the entire thing by yourself.
Chelimo soloed that SOB. That's harder than having someone right between, pushing you along.

Regardless, I'm sure someone has soloed a 5000 faster than Chelimo did though he did have pretty crap weather too.
This was certainly a different time. You would never see True, Jenkins or Hill run a 13:40 unless the race was tactical, yet in the '70s, fast runners often ran very slow times (in non tactical races). Why? (Looking at Kimobwa)

Bekele did NOT close that 10k in sub 13 by leading the whole way. Haile made that race. Bekele was much less of a front runner than letsrun fans would have you believe.
I wouldn't call him a front runner as he had the kick to win when he wanted. He went for time plenty of times and in those races he lead for large portions...even in a championship race (2008 Beijing 5,000m) he lead almost 9 laps of the race

Paul Chelimo isn't even the fastest "Chelimo" to front run the whole race.
I checked several reports of people who were actually there, including the broadcast.

Didn't Tariku pace the first 5K of one of Kenenisa's 10K WRs? He ran a 13:07 or 13:09 or something. Not sure if that counts since he didn't win and there were guys right behind him, but still pretty badass to run that for the first half of a 10K. Not to mention Kenenisa running the second 5K at almost the same pace on his own...

Moorcrofts run is the best front run effort although not right from the gun. The first lap or slow actually slowed his time its not like he was paced.
Plus back then 13:00 was a massive world record. 13:08 now is nothing special

Soloing over half a wr race is good enough for me, he has done plenty of front running anyway other times
