12:38 for 2 miles. The course is decently hilly. I have no doubt he would have been a 15-16 minute 3 miler if he did it in high school but he did end up high jumping 6-10 as a junior. Incredibly talented athlete.

NBA players that play huge minutes spend a lot of time strolling around, with a few short sprints mixed in. The actual basketball performance specific training is not 5k, prob something more like 0-400m with field events thrown in.

But, it's been a part of American sporting culture to have "run hard" in training. Especially the classic basketball greats. Running is significant in the biographies of Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, etc. (Michigan and Philadelphia)

Those guys at some point were worth 16-something for 5k. I mean look at some of those big oak trees in the 80s in their short shorts. Running was fashionable in the 80s and 90s. I don't know how helpful, but different players can parlay it into different roles. I know that when I was new to running, it helped me hit threes in transition against intimidating opponents. Could have helped Kobe's great shooting game.

Have any of you actually ever done large amounts of both sports? I did both in high school, though I only started cross/track in my sophomore year. Basketball training alone only got me a 19:50 right out of the gate. With distance specific training I eventually got done to mid 16s. I had a basketball teammate with similar results. He was a 6'5" guy but eventually got down to low 17s, but only after distance specific training.

I also had a cross country teammate in college who was good enough in both sports that the DII university I was at allowed him to do both sports initially. After one year, he switched to cross/track only because the two sports are not compatible enough to do both at a high level. Distance training will kill your leaping ability and your lateral quickness. Playing large amounts of basketball will help your speed and explosiveness but make it very difficult to get the miles in necessary to be competitive. They are great athletes but I don't think any of these big body NBA guys will run a 16 minute 5k unless they are putting in some miles and doing some interval work on top of their basketball, which they will not do because doing more than a 2 or 3 miles a few times a week is not good for top level basketball.
