15 Minutes was the loose guesstimate on how long it would take for him to go back to his team area, find the bib, put it on, and get back to the starting line.

Why bother even requiring a uniform for the guy? By your logic, you could even have a black and white kid both forget their uniforms and since they're still distinguishable, no harm no foul? Slippery slopes are slippery for a reason, and its why rules are made to be black and white (no pun intended).

The need for a bib as a function of running a meet isn't necessary, just like jerseys aren't a need, just like the rule about no electronic devices in and around competition areas. The point is that once rules have been established, people need to take responsibility for their actions in following said rules. Sucks for the guy and his team, but placing the blame on anyone other than the young man (or his coach if the bib never got to him) is just lashing out from frustration.

In a meet almost as big as the NCAA East Regionals, this guy lost his jersey and bib in the middle of the high jump. They let him jump anyway. He won:

Somehow for decades they managed without any bibs at all and they can't let a guy do a heat at regionals without his bib? come on. They can fine the program next time it happens.

Or you know, he can just remember to wear his bib.

Are we forgetting how boneheaded of a move that is???? If I were the coach, I'd be pissed at the athlete for being so careless, not at the officials for following the rules that the we already knew about.

This idea that someone else could run for him is such a farce.

He could run for anyone at a low key D3 only meet where few people knew who he was and gotten a lot of his teammates in. But he didn't?

Every bib should be picked up by the athlete with an ID beforehand by this logic. But that doesn't happen does it. Let the kid run...don't ruin a season for a stupid rule that is impossible to enforce any other meet of the season.

It will be amazing. Now I'm only fine with that if they let 25 into the next round, not 24. Just have him run this round to get tired out. The 1500 isn't a race that's run for time. It's often tactical. So you can't not take the final time qualifier.

I haven't read the whole rule book but have never seen it. Is it even a rule?

It's not in the rule book but it is likely in the "local rules" which pertain to the meet.

Either way doesn't look good for anyone involved. But let the kid run. He's a damn college kid whom the university spent a lot of money to get down here. He's a clear contender and they should not hire behind the inability to verify him.

Hell have they verified anyone else on the start line? I know they didn't check anyone elses IDs and ask for two forms of verification and a credit card from every athlete. That is a garbage excuse for someone getting on their high horse. Time to end this nonsense.

Ok one thing that needs to be pointed out: he didn't have his bib # because he didn't even have on HIS SINGLET. He was in a team-issued long sleeve. Absolutely no one's fault but his own.

In the end it doesn't matter, and everyone saying he should be given a break should be happy: he was just advanced on to the next round without having to run.

So why not from now on just forget your uniform, not race, throw a fit, and be advanced. It's utterly ridiculous. At some point personal responsibility matters. Unfortunately that's not the lesson that was taught here.
