1.Steve Morse , you can say whatever you want, but if you haven't heard this guy, you don't know enough about guitar to comment.

Eliot Fisk. Listen to his performance (his arrangement too) of Paganini's 24 Caprices. If you play guitar, you'll know the only reason it's believable is that he's done it.
Good call. Comparing these rock and roll guys to Fisk would be like comparing a tool shed to the Cathedral of Chartres.
Duane Allman--best slide player.
Out.
Sonny Landreth. Once you hear him, you'll have no doubt. Phenomenal artist.
Hendrix all the way.

Jimmy Page (nuff said)
great musician, but quite a sloppy technique, especially live as Led Zep concert recordings show.
Hendrix for me, he was just awesome musically, technically and emotionally.
Eric Clapton
Phil Keaggy
who ever said dave matthews made me laugh. if you can play your songs sitting on a stool, you arent good. also, any great guitarist knows how to bend strings. SRV, in my opinion, has one of the best vibrato's ever, and if anybody could point me to somebody who has a better one, please do
Clapton
SRV - no doubt, even Clapton says so.
There is a guy in the Roanoke Valley of Va., Richard Jessee who is a god on the axe.
Drums - Peart
Bass - Flea
Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen. I'm glad Page got the first vote. They have the best combos of song-writing ability and pure playing skill. Page wrote better music, but Eddie completely revolutionized guitar from a technician's standpoint and was much better live.
Well besides the obvious (Clapton, Hendrix), here are some thoughts:
- Dave Gilmour - Pink Floyd - check out solo in "Time," a good part of Animals, and then on the Wall you got some great work, with Comfortably Numb possibly being his finest hour. Even on marginal work like the Division Bell his guitar work breaks through.
- Vernon Reid - Livin Colour - amazing solo on "cult of personality."
- Joey Santiago Pixies - underrated for sure. Someone less concerned with standing out and making sure his guitar works for the song. Still doesnt mean he cant bust out a solo("Vamos")
- Doug Martsch of primarily "Built to Spill" but also "Halo Benders" - My favorite and I think the best. His solos are soaring and epic and fit well within the work. Then he makes a solo album and shows himself to be a virtuoso on the slide guitar. He is the best there is today.
Some added random comments:
SRV is insane as a pure player, there really isn't anyone better for his style of music ("blooze"). I like a lot of his music too from a composition standpoint. Jimi Hendrix has just never done it for me from a songwriting perspective. He has a few good tunes, but nothing like Led Zep or Van Halen or many many many other bands.
Page was sloppy live (hence my comments about EVH being better live), but I think his NASTY songwriting abilities (anyone who could come up with the solo to Whole Lotta Love is a GOD) way, way, way, way, way more than make up for any live sloppiness. The man sure wasn't sloppy in the studio.
Second page and noone's said Mark Knopfler yet, so let me be the first. I can sing all the guitar parts to Sultans of Swing (not well, according to my son), and Telegraph Road puts me into a trance.
If we were talking about the best technically speaking, then I'd say:
Guitar -- Yngwie Malmsteen
Bass -- Victor Wooten
Drums -- Vinnie Paul
If we are indeed talking about the "greatest", I'd have to second Jimmy Hendrix. But I'm a big metal fan, so I'm also gonna throw Randy Rhodes in there. And I'm gonna be really gay here and say that one of the best CURRENT guitarists is John Mayer. If you don't agree then you haven't heard him live.
**And who ever said Dave Matthews is ummmm....well you know. I know I said John Mayer, but Mayer is a far better guitarist than Matthews.
eric clapton
Neal Peart & Keith Moon are two of the greatest Drummers ever. Period
I just saw Kenny Wayne Shepherd play & he is now in my mind as one of the greats. Better then VH, Satriani & Hendrix. The guy is still just 27ish & had his first platinum when he was still in High School. Also, Tom Morello can do some crazy stuff on the guitar.
Tim Cummerford is a pretty darn good Bassist too.
Tom Morello is pretty awesome. Very Hendrix-like in terms of innovation.
Anyone who hasn't heard Django Reinhardt, you need to check him out.
DIMEBAG DARRELL!!!!!!!
