High Schooler DJ Principe Runs 4:00.97

so if hunter were in the NCAA he would currently ran 3rd and be the top true freshman by 9 seconds or so. I recognize that his time on last year's indoor rankings would've been just 22nd at the end of the season but this was Hunter's debut. I think it demonstrates he is worth his salt as it seemed that was under fire in the fall...

Anyone know where Principe is going to school next year? if i were him, I would try my damnedest to go to Stanford. In my opinion, that is an opportunity hunter missed out on cashing in on. Few athletes in this support have the chance to leverage their ability for a place at a top university.

Today's result makes me wonder if DJ would have won NXN had he not been sick. No way the kid gets 21st if he was healthy.

Correct. That 3:58 is equal to about 7:57. Not bad at all, just not 7:49.

He will have some pretty good training partners at Stanford with Fisher, the other New Englander Ratcliffe, and maybe the younger McGorty is also joining him at Stanford?

Impressive group at Stanford.

The momentum Stanford has based on the past couple years of recruiting (taking nothing away from the athletes that were already in place as they are very good as well), both Stanford men and women's team are looking to be mid-d/distance dominant in the very near future.

Centro's strictly time wise is a worse opener. So you are flat out wrong. How bad an opener is, is relevant to how fast the person is. Nobody was saying a 3:58.9 is equivalent to a 7:49.

That said it's dumb to say either was a bad opener. They both won and nobody knows what else they had in the tank.

Hunter did not have much left in the tank, maybe a few tablespoons more of "balls to the wall".

Centro's tank was a little less than half empty. He could have run another 4 and 3/4 laps at the same pace before entering 'break a sweat' territory.

To say that more clearly, Hunter was within two seconds of his pr, maybe a just a bit more than a second, while Centro did not run all out and was nine seconds off his pr and looked like he was ready to uncork a fast one very soon. Principe had a very solid team but no sub four milers. It is always a big stepup from high school to one of the top college teams in the country.

There has only been 9 sub 4 min HS milers in the history of T&F. The odds of him having that in his team is/was very low.

As a junior, he got to train with Salisbury (4:04) and Bouthiliette (8:53). Pretty much the best partners you can get as a HS junior. You wouldn't want more than that.

This year however, he is pretty much alone. They have a very good young team (one of the freshman has run sub 4:30 already), but certainly no sub 4:10 guys (other than Principe) on the team.

Maybe he is actually getting a rebound effect from that. He was running (too) hard last year in training and is training more within his means this year. Thus performing better. You see that sometimes in post Olympic years (guys train very hard in the Olympic year, but actually get the real benefit the following year).

being sick didn't help, but it is worth noting that kate murphy was only in the 30s at NXN, and there were no indications she was sick. She is better relative to the rest of the women on the track than DJ is relative to the rest of the guys.

NXN course was a slimy nightmare for milers. Even Reed Brown suffered for it.
