Her record beats any women who has ever touched the incline, she claims to hold the female record.
A little off topic, but how is the incline steps since repaired? I have not been there since the upgrade. That used to be a big part of the battle, uneven steps/rhythm with some the equivalent of 2-3 normal height steps.
Also, I have seen little mention of the altitude effect on this woman carrying 100 pounds. I think altitude would have a greater negative impact on someone carrying that much weight.
It's probably legit, honestly as her witnesses to the record are Kaiha Bertollini, Anne Gemkow, Gregory Price, Kip Litton, Mike Rossi and Jill Greathouse. All part of the same training group.
Generalized military studies say every 1% of your body weight in a pack makes you 6 seconds slower per mile. So for her 135 lb weight carrying 100 lbs that's 74% of her body weight and makes her 74 x 6 sec per mile slower = 444 seconds or 7 minutes 44 seconds slower per mile
And a 10% grade cuts your speed in half whether you are loaded or not. So it takes you twice as long.
So let's say her mile time is 4:30.
Add 7:44 to that and you have 12:14.
Times 2 due to 10% incline = 24:28
Keep in mind the incline at Manitou exceeds 10%.
To pull roughly 31:27 what she claims then split it as 15:45 without the incline
And without the 100 lbs she would be 7:44 faster or 8:00 mile.
So that claim is more likely. But fails in the actual higher incline of the Manitou incline and uneven bending nature of that incline.
The manitou incline grades at 45% average with as high as 68% at spots.
So for every 10% you double your time assuming no weight. So basically take 4.5 times your mile time. A 4 minute miler in theory could do 18 minutes on it. Obviously this is not exact, but there's some approximate validity to it.
With her claimed time of 19:27, expect her to be able to do a mile in about 4:20.
So she is in the wrong sport. She can have a better and longer career in track and field. Could probably win the decathlon and beat Caster Semenya.

If it is 45% ave grade and .9 m in length then deduct 10% from times
A 4:00 miler could expect:
4:00 x 4.5 = 18
Less 10% of 1.8 = 16.2 or 16:12.
The men's record appears to be 17:45 so obviously the terrain and bends account for some difference. And going for 18 minutes is different than for 4 in other ways.
All in all I would not expect a non sport specific athlete like her (meaning she is not exclusively trained as a
Mountain runner) to be able to approach peak performance times.
I doubt she can break 5:30 in the mile. That would put her at 24:45 less 10%
That would put her at 22:00 minutes without a pack. Add 7:44 for the pack and she is at 29:44. Still a heckuva pair of performances If she could do them. Most people even trained specifically as runners can't do that even if the incline was a closed course. In reverse her claim 100 lb time of 31 minutes would put her at: -7:44 = 23:44 add 10% (.9 course) = 21:15 / 4.5 = a 4:43 mile.
Again the math applies in perfect conditions no wind no bends or turns no traffic and a smooth incline surface. The manitou incline is harder based on others performances.
The weight vest she is wearing in the article looks like a hypervest pro which would max out at 21.4 lbs. so presumably she has another vest?

I would suspect the record would equate to roughly a 4 minute mile or faster as the only person in history to ever run in the 17's before (not fully verified) was Matt Carpenter (Manitou native and Pikes peak marathon champion, leadville 100 CR holder) and he had the highest v02 max ever recorded of any runner.

Logistical question: is the mile measured vertically, or is it "along" the course, so on a diagonal?
I feel like I should know which of these methods is used to measure any course, but I honestly don't know.
He has the Pike's Peak ascent record, which is far better than a sub-4:00.

That record is legit but not equivalent to sub 4. The race hasn't had much comp besides 2 or 3 international stars here and there if you really think about it.
Plus there are many miles in the middle that are rough now and the last 4 miles also more rough now since the big storms in Manitou. So his record is fairly safe unless they do course trail repairs. Gray, Walmsley or perhaps Kilian could challenge that 2:01 record if course is repaired..

She's not being honest. That 30 minutes with the weight vest was when I carried her on my back while she was wearing the weight vest. I also broke my ankle and dislocated my hip about halfway up and finished hopping on one leg. I did it in 15 minutes just before that so carrying her and the weight vest and the injuries slowed me down a lot.

Joe is the IAAF World Champion and nine-times U.S. mountin running champion. If you don't consider that a world-class performance, in relation to sub-4:00, which isn't, you are sadly mistaken. Matt is on the same level. Frank Shorter never broke your precious 4:00 barrier either, yet somehow he is recognized as a pretty decent runner.
