Exactly. The BBC announcers were 100% certain Rupp would be caught. Until he wasn't.

That's because the chase group was closing fast. Meanwhile, Rupp nearly ran into bollards on the course making super wide turns. That is why they though he would be caught. But the chase group slowed, and Rupp was still able to make turns by slowing down to almost a walk.

You obviously failed to watch the Rio marathon. If you had you would know 4th place closed a huge amount on Rupp as Rupp was fading. That effort took a toll on 4th place but they went for it as they should have.
When they passed the big church with about 3 miles to go Rupp was about 10 seconds behind Lilesa and a minute ahead of Gebrselassie. He finished about 10 seconds behind Lilesa and a minute ahead of Gebrselassie. The only 2 to close substantially faster than Rupp were Kipchoge and Ward, Kipchoge because he's Kipchoge, and Ward because he didn't try and hang with the crazy surge from 30-35k.
I'd be interested to see splits. Did Rio post 5km splits or the like for each athlete?

splits 30-35, 35-40, 40-42
3. Rupp 14:26, 15:31, 6:53
4. Gheb.. 15:23, 15:18, 6:53

Hey, this is Letsrun. Nobody here is interested in facts. 4th place closed a huge amount on Rupp because I say so.

Who cares how much he beat fourth place by? This is a silver medalist in the 10k and a professional runner who does nothing but train with the best resources available (legal and perhaps illegal). I would compare him to the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs went all in this past offseason to win the World Series. If they don't, then it is nothing more than a disappointment.

If Rupp had ditched his hat and not gotten replacements, he would have been able to dissipate heat better and he would have gotten silver.
Do you think that the helium-infused NOP hats Rupp was wearing resemble the performance of your trucker hat you jogged in in any way?
Last 2.2k fourth made up exactly 0 seconds on Rupp lol
And he's not lucky to to be third what is this logic
There was one point late in the race where Rupp looked tired slowing down around a curve ( see
https://youtu.be/lMlWYFLUp78?t=6459
) and I think that gave rise to all this nonsense about him bonking and fading.
The thing is, Kipchoge slowed down for that curve too (
https://youtu.be/lMlWYFLUp78?t=6418
).
Nobody could hang with Kipchoge over the last several miles. Rupp couldn't quite catch the Ethiopian kid, but you saw Rupp looking back several times and he stayed strong to hang onto his medal.
Well Kipchoge was running 4:35 miles aka 2 hours flat pace lol
It's just crazy how much Rupp hater gotta dig for something, like saying he's lucky for third when he's 59 seconds ahead of fourth lol

What what your strategy with the hat after taking it off? Did you carry it or throw it away? The former would affect my form. I think the latter would have had a negative impact on my run psychologically - knowing I had needlessly lost a hat I'd spent $20 on.
Word on the street is that he had bought a bunch of hats from running warehouse before the race and didn't want to lose them, so he was sticking the old ones down his shorts each time he grabbed a new one. I believe they showed this at least once during the coverage.

Missed his shorts:
https://youtu.be/lMlWYFLUp78?t=5645I think the bigger factor was the 10K. I think doing that race may have cost him the silver.

Did you watch the race?
35-40k: Rupp 15:31, Gheb 15:18
The gap closed more than that amount during the actual race.

A reasonable explanation for Rupp stating his legs were hurting when he slowed and had trouble making turns.
Most likely reason is that two people finished ahead of him, rather than one, which would have been the requirement to win silver

Not true wrote:Incorrect. He mentally and physically bonked. He had trouble making turns the last part. Hat weight had no impact on his placing. He is lucky to not drop back to fourth or worse.
He might not have bonked so hard if he wasn't too hot from wearing the hat. The heat probably effected him mentally.
Possibly even affected him
