At walmart she actually went in and talked to the management about getting a cashier or stocking job. Anything they had available. She filled out the online app and there is an education profile on it. In hindsight she should have put down no education and dumb downed work history.

Is she a good writer with research interests in her field? If so, she can probably make some cash writing blog posts or more formal articles for either general circulation publications or professional websites that cover her field.

Tutoring is also a good way to pick up some cash. Does your school have an academic support center for student athletes that hires tutors? If so, this is a pretty good way to make a few bucks while letting someone else handle the legwork of finding students and scheduling appointments. There's more money to be made offering private tutoring, but then you have to do your own marketing and scheduling.

If she has any interest in teaching within her field, a lot of schools hire people from all over to teach online courses. Penn State's World Campus is the one I'm familiar with, but I'm sure there are plenty of others.

not many tutoring options available for athletic admin/compliance. She has no interest in reaserch in this field just wants to work. She has been to our tutoring/academic aid area 3 times to apply for jobs /ga/ and even volunteer and has been turned away each time. It is really frustrating. If I were a religious man I would assume god wants us out.

If she's a teacher, then online teaching generally following a standard curriculum. It's huge.

She is not a teacher, has no experience in teaching. Her education and work experience is in university admin. We have never seen tutors need for admin degrees. Is there really a need for that?

You don't have to work in an area professionally to tutor or teach undergrad courses in the subject. I work in city planning, but I've tutored intro microeconomics courses when I wanted some extra cash. This is something you can do independently if no university department wants to hire. Maybe this doesn't interest her, but the idea that she can't tutor because no one needs tutoring in athletic admin/compliance is nonsensical. She has presumably taken other courses during her academic career.

Breaking into a new community can be tough, especially if it's isolated and small. Subbing for a year at the high school?

Thing is, those coaching jobs are tough to get and if you leave without much of a 'track record' and not a new job lined up, you'll have a tough time getting your next job.

Is there a bunch of farming around your locale? The farmer's coop will need an administrator. How about the regional construction/farming equipment leaser? They need administrators.

So your wife studied administrative compliance and/or worked in that field and expects a job? I'm sorry, but in today's economy there are no jobs outside of stem, except through nepotism. I'd suggest you both look for new jobs in a bigger town or move somewhere half way between this college town and a place you can find a job. Is this a college of 1-2k students? What do the students do outside of class? Surely the town has something going on where your wife could find work.

If its really that rural, could you open a bed and breakfast or something?

Could your wife study at the college to work towards breaking into a new field like teaching?

If you just jump ship and move, you both may be out of work for a couple years or have to get a job at starbucks or something until you can find something else.

Someone suggested it, but my first thought was for your wife to get more education. It is possible to negotiate reduced or free tuition if you work at a school for your family members and children.

She could get a second degree in something that would earn her more money, i.e.. teaching or a master's degree or even a Ph.D given her current education level. It's always a good idea to get more education in a recession or downturn, and if she could take classes for free or without taking on any debt, that is valuable.

Also, have her put an ad on Craigslist for whatever she'd like to do and see if she gets responses. If she has administrator experience, perhaps she'd be good at organizing a business, home office or a home. This type of work would allow her to work in her field of experience and expertise.

I too like the idea of a blog. It's free to start a blog, you can build a website on Wix.com for free too. Brainstorm with her what she enjoys spending her time doing, and then brainstorm possible work options. Is she a good writer? Could she take her expertise and experience in her Administration field and put it into a book form? Self publish or search for a business publisher.

Also, consider what the town you live in DOESN'T have, but needs. Maybe a small book store with a coffee bar would get her out of the house, create a presence in the community, etc.

Good luck. I just moved to a small town of less than 10,000 people and it can be tough to get a foothold in the town. If she's depressed have her get outside and exercise, go to a coffee shop every day and talk to someone. Don't let her isolate herself but get out each day and go to the library, a book store, a coffee shop, etc. Walking and running, being outside will help her mood and her outlook.
