Lagat did fall and get trampled by the whole field and still got back up and caught up to the lead pack. 3:30 after his senior year, 3:34 before that, so you know he was talented. And running 3:34 a year after leaving college is not comparable to what Wheating did: he ran 3:30 in his first Euro 1500m after graduating.

But Centro, Wheating, Andrews, Lukezic, Stempber, and Jennings were ALL HS AND COLLEGE STARS. (OK wheating wasn't a HS star). Alexander was a nothing and he wasn't like totally amazing in HS either.

Can someone please tell me why he was so bad at Oregon? 2 points during his entire career. Admittedly to score as a redshirt frosh is pretty good but to go 0-3 after that is bad.

Was he struggling with injuries?

Here's a trivia question for you, who has a better lifetime PR. Gabe Jennings - who won NCAAs and Olympic Trials - or Colby Alexander who didn't score at Pac 12s as a sophomore, junior or senior?

When did he pick up running. Give me his year by year SBs in HS and then college? Please put in how much he was training and whether he was injured.

I remember he had swine flu his hs senior year xc season. He was redshirted his freshman year due to being such a low mileage guy in high school (40-50 mpw max during xc seasons and less during track). Sophomore xc season he got mono and then pretty sure when he was getting back into shape in the winter he got injured again.

The thing you have to realize is that 3:34 is no longer fast. If you unwrapped the pantie elastic that's around your brain, you'd probably be similarly capable.

Americans are so tied up in their BS that its tough to run fast. A college, your loans, your parents, training, getting a job.

Overseas no cares about anything except running fast. I never cared about my future financial security. I just ran hard and slept where I fell.

You guys all have to measure your sphincter for approval.

Then in 20 years you'll post here and ask "I am 40 years old and when I was in high school I ran X. I just ran x + y. What do you think I would have run had I kept training?"

And the answer is x. You never had the head for it. You never sacrificed your future. You never thought running fast was more important than social growth.

Just get a job and forget about the fast guys. Enjoy them for their sacrifice. Those sacrifices you weren't able to make. 3:34: is about 80 yards slower than the best in the world. Pedestrian

First singalongballs is an angry human

Colby ran 4:09 in HS and made footlocker finals but didn't do well there. He comes from a family of runners and has been known to have done more than his share of speed work even before HS. He has also had his share of injuries.

In college he was on NCAA champ DMR anchored by chez. He had some good races but injuries got the best of him.

He is also one of the guys who went to Europe and ran some "C" level 1500s but got mocked on these boards for running in bad euro meets instead of running at Houston.

3:34.88 is 27th fastest in the WORLD in an Olympic year with only a few races remaining.

3:34.88 would have also been 27th in the WORLD last year after the entire season. Do you have any idea how good being top 30 out of the entire freakin' world is??? Haha you angry idiot.

And there's a good chance that at least 5-10 of the dudes that are faster are doing a little extra juicy juice.

Rojo, I'm too lazy to do work that is otherwise something you get paid to do (go to oh.milesplit and look at his progression yourself).

I have run against Colby since 2005 (middle school) and he was always very good. He was in my region for cross country.

By his sophomore year of HS, he had already established himself as a solid miler. Remember, back in 2007, 4:14 was pretty fast. He was never as gifted in cross country, and as one poster said, he contracted swine flu and didn't even qualify to the state meet. That was a really weak year for Ohio XC, and many people had him as a dark horse to win the individual title. The weirdest part of that season was that he ended up placing 7th I think at Footlocker Midwest, and qualified for Footlocker nationals. I don't know how many people have NOT qualified for their state meet but ended up going to Footlocker nationals. He might be the only one.

He took that momentum into indoor, and I think he set the state record in the mile (4:09). I think he placed pretty well in the mile at indoor nationals. He ran a bunch of 4:09s in his senior outdoor season.

As an aside, I remember when he committed to Oregon. I think he verbally committed right after Footlocker nationals. I remember thinking, wow, qualifying really saved that for him

With this set of results (Jenkins 3:35 high and Johnny Gregorek 3:36.0!!!) there is absolutely no doubt NJNY is the second best milers group in the US, now or whenever anyone wants to lace up.

He ran a 3:36.56 in 2015. The shocking part should be the lack of scoring in college not running 1.8s faster a year later.

There are a lot of guys with one off fast times (see Dorian Ulrey and his 3:35 that I don't think he has come with in 3 seconds of since. Or Wheating 3:30). Not many of them year after year through down fast times. Hopefully Colby is the exception

Lagat ran 3:26, had a positive A sample, and lied about his US citizenship. Quit race baiting you idiot liberal.

Ask the coaches at Oregon and they will tell you no one in program history had a bad luck 5 year stretch like Alexander. Always something. Every year. I don't think he ever, not once, ran a full season of anything. Yet again, ask Andy Powell or Vin and they will tell you he's as talented as anyone they've ever coached.

He got injured in April last year but Powell kept him healthy from May thru Sept and he ran great. Now Gags has kept him healthy since then. This is obviously what we can learn to expect when he strings together significant healthy training cycles.

Oh and to keep him healthy, he reportedly only runs 50 to 60 miles a week. Not a whole lot at that level but possibly why he ran out of gas in the Trials final after 2 rounds of racing prior to the final.
