Let's say these athletes were indeed U.S. born, would there be this much derision? We should be candid, if they were foreign but white, would there be this much frustration? Perhaps so. But as an athletics community, we should have an earnest conversation about how much race and place of birth makes a difference.

race? people from east africa seem to have an advantage. maybe their lack of opportunity in other areas transfers to greater potential in running.
birthplace? if every country who competed at the olympics were like america and allowed foreign born competition the olympic track and field meet would be an east african championships (moreso than it already is)
1) It's weird and bad that an entire olympic team in an event was born overseas.
2) It's particularly bad that the whole team is East African born
3) It's also bad that the same problem is happening at the European champs
4) It will be progressively harder for pro track to attract fans if the winners are all born in East Africa, even in Europe and American championships.

Martina Navratilova was portrayed as this evil figure who was preventing "Chris America" (Evert, that is) from winning all the major titles, long after she became a US citizen herself. So yes, I think there would be frustration if Nick Wills or Kim Smith had "stolen" Olympic berths from US born athletes.

It's not about "exclusively white". It's about being American. That is growing up American in America because of being born American. It's not about race, color, ethnicity etc. It's happened in many other nations too. I'm actually tired of this. Watching big televised track meets where 90% of the competitors are African runners like the Diamond League is bad for many reasons. People need to speak up about that and maybe stop attending the meetings. It's all a divide and conquer tactic.
It started in the NCAA when coaches who could not develop talent started importing talent and taking scholarship money away from the children of families that paid taxes for over 18 years.
Coaches that were incompetent went overseas to buy NCAA titles so AD's could increase budgets and improve their own paychecks and careers.
Then several agents (Hebron Group is an example) started bringing over hired guns to dominate many of the local road races - again aided by Race Director's who wanted to attract "elite" runners and ignored charges of doping and provided funding to get better times - the locals that provide the $ to the sponsors and local businesses no longer had any chance to win prizes
It then expanded into groups like the Army where it was easier to build a squad of Kenyan runners to claim Olympic spots. Any poster on LR could be a World Class recruiter by leveraging the most powerful incentives available (fast track citizenship, post military benefits, world class training facilities and resources, and big paychecks to send back to families in Kenya). Every WCAP athlete should have to serve at least 50% of their enlistment term prior to having access to WCAP $$$$ and then have a 12 month period to achieve WCAP standards or you are out (Paul Katam)
If you cannot Make America Great Again then BUYING success it is an easy out and America can applaud the ill begotten gains of Recruiters that decided to take the easy path to success
