I meant Ray. He ran for PC in the early 80's. I thought he got 2nd in NCAA,but I may be wrong. Please explain the age limit rule. I thought if you start your freshman year by age 23, you have 4yrs of eligibility..you can even redshirt which would make you a 28 yr old senior. The rule may have been differnt in the 80's.

Ah, yes, those would be the WC's that Marianne Dickerson medaled in the marathon. She moved to Ann Arbor afterward and went to grad school a couple years but never ran as well again.

I was a senior in high school.......those were the days when runners actually trained seriously and invested a few years of running before walk/running 26.2 miles and proclaiming themselves to be "marathoners". Salazar battled Rodgers on the roads, Mary Decker ruled the track, and Pat Porter kicked everyone's a$$ in XC. Boy am I old.

I was a junior at Bowling Green State University running cross country and track. Mel Brodt was the CC coach, he just passed away December 17, 2002. He was a very well known coach. I still train and race today as a masters runner. Some of my best times were run from 1983 to 1988. Now that you mentioned it, wow, it is hard to believe 1983 was 20 years ago!!! Some great runners back then (and of course now...)! I love this sport!!!!!!!!!

I will second the American Eagle flats. I got the big Xmas gift (1982) of American Eagle racers, and the white/navy Dolphin pinstripe singlet/short combo....I was a senior in HS looking very goofy running early 1983 Cal all comers meets in the above outfit...but it seem to work at the time.

I was a senior in H.S. then in Washington state. at the state meet there were 6 runners who broke 4:10 for the 1600 meters. I ran 9:36 for 3200 meters and did not make it past our league meet.

I still run, not too many of my peers from back then still do.

The NCAA Clearing House details the rule, but basically

your D1 clock starts ticking once you enroll from HS or

if you didn't go to any school at the onset of your 21st

birthday. 4yrs total - if you start at 21 you lose the luxury of the red shirt buffer so your max is 25.

The exception is if you are in the US military then the

clock is stopped, but begins to tick upon your end of

duty again 4yrs no red shirt.

the Bay Area was happening in '83. I have been competing since '67. Not as long as Orville but I can remember seeing his name in the papers. Bay to Breakers was already huge. The centipede action was hot. One of the local TV stations wanted to interveiw the Long winning AGGIE centipede. At the Foothills CC track the reporter made the mistake of asking the'Nut' how the centipede ran so fast. His reply " it's the drugs'. Back then the drugs were for fun. Not this steroid stuff of todays drugs.

I was born in 1983. I don't even think I took any steps that year.

1983...great year, graduated HS and got better with running each year after. Still running today. Also "The Runner" Magazine was still being published then. Man, that was a great magazine!

1983 - I'd been running for 19 yrs at that time and had 2 toddlers in the house and a 60hr/wk job. I ran a 17:45 5k on 18mi/wk training and was grateful that I could squeeze in that much running. Now I have time to run 60-70 mi/wk and I expect to run about the same time for 5k. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I had recently finished college at Eastern Illinois University, and ran the 1981 Detroit Free Press Marathon in 2:24:46, followed by a 2:25:25 at the 1982 Grandma's Marathon.

Just for the heck of it, I tried putting on a 10K in my hometown (Nick's 10K, Dolton, Illinois) in 1983. The course was flat and T.A.C. certified and below is our all-time list for the 6-year duration of the race>>>>

Back in the 1980s, I remember how much midwestern runners loved competition, instead of EASY PAYDAYS.

"The Runner" was a great magazine because they actually wrote about running and racing. RW continues to sink to new lows by putting a comedian on the cover (calling him a "marathoner" like we should be impressed), writing about stupid races through the mud in the middle of nowhere, and proclaiming some guy named The Penguin to be "the next great profet of running". In 1983, people who competed in road races and marathons didn't incorporate planned walk breaks.

I wil third them. My first pair of racing flats in my sophomore year of high school in Mass. I put them on and ran a PR by a minute on our 2.75 mile cross-country course. I was hooked. But now we're getting back into that racing flat thread from a few weeks ago...

I actually saved pair from back then that I never wore. Took a look at them recently. Can't believe I used to race in them. They are soooo light.

1983 was my first year running for Kent State. Earl Jones was a freshman at Eastern and they went 1-2-3 at MAC in the 1500 (Jones ran 3:42!) and all 3 qualified for the NCAA meet-I'm thinking Holy S___ maybe I should have gone DII or III! Mark Smith and Brian Carlton were rolling people in the Steeple,5 and 10. I remember trying to recruit a good sprinter/long jumper from Archbishop Hoban HS (Akron, Ohio) named Harry Reynolds who ended up going to a JC before showing up at Ohio State as Butch Reynolds....

Everyone and their brother had a pair of American Eagles to race/do intervals in and the old pre air sole Nike Pegasus in Battleship gray got many a runner through many good fast miles. Michael Jackson and Prince were actually cool and Madonna wasn't dressed yet.... MTV showed videos and the mullet was high style!
