A lot of the guys who do not have the Oly standard are still paid a bonus by their sponsors based on how high they finish in this race. So if the go to hard too early, they are risking finishing 10th to 12th rather than 4th to 6th which would give them a much better pay day.
I think I am classified as a millennial (born 1988) and I have never received a participation trophy in my life, so I have no idea WTF you are talking about. The only time I've ever received something for not winning a race is these stupid road races I sign up for where, apparently, it is an accomplishment to finish any race over 15k. I'm also pretty sure it wasn't millennials who decided to start handing out finisher medals at marathons, half-marathons, etc. seeing as the majority of participants are older adults........

I think a fast race greatly helps Blankenship as compared to Robby and Leo in particular. Leo is lethal in races where he's near the lead with 400 to go.
There are funnel cloud warnings in Eugene for 5 pm. That being said the 12 mph wind is coming from the SW. That's good for the guys who want the standard as it will be blocked the stadium.
The North part of the stadium is the one without the big stands.
The Hayward track is located south to north.
I feel like people might actually give it a go this time given how LAME the men's 1500 in the US has been this year. Ben True still has the fastest time in the country, yet guys like Mcnamara and Wheating can't even break 3:38 in a rabbited race. However, I wouldn't be surprised if it were slow because no matter what people say leading up to a championship final, it usually ends up being a situation where finishing-speed-egos are what it's all about. When was the last time a US final was won under 3:40 besides the 2012 trials? I'm not counting 2014 since that was an off-year.

Hint: the oldest millennials are about 35-36 now. Pretty much ALL of the world's greatest track and field athletes of the moment are millennials. Obviously some of them are pulling weight.
When the standard's missed by legitimate contenders, many of you will cry that leading = sacrificial lamb. Ignoring what Ritz did last trials, what Rupp & Molly did in the 10K & what Cobral did in his 2012 Olympic semis- Lead & succeed. A lot more followers fail than leaders.
