I absolutely do not blame Saarel for the seize up. Wasn't his fault. His right leg just went out on him. I didn't appreciate the announcers blaming the guy behind him, though. Obviously wasn't his fault. He kept his forward motion line while Saarel jumped over almost an entire lane in one stride.

I understand the guy falling getting into the semi, but why Saarel? Did he qualify on time?

It is a huge disadvantage to lead in a fast pace against a quality field in a track distance race. This is why so many championship races are slow paced early. It is rare for the winner to lead wire to wire and in most cases medal or qualify for the next round. I suspect that those who state athletes should run the Olympic trials like a time trial have little to no experience running at a high level and simply don't understand.

Making the race fast so that they can qualify on time works,.....for everyone but the person setting the pace. The higher the level of competition, the more this is true.

Tonight, in average competitive races the four early leaders and their finish places were Kampf (10th), Donohue (10th), Alexander (3rd), and Solis (12th) and these were all pedestrian paces. The standard is the faster the pace and the farther they fall.
