I think people like to do this because it can never be answered.

And there are two off days on the track so this will be analyzed to death until running resumes.

The 800 is the most unpredictable event on the track.

And luck has a major impact on it.

I'm not saying Montano didn't trip Martinez just that at the time Montano was running fast with a good shot to win or podium.

I would say top 3 would've been Wilson, Montano and Grace. Martinez tripping like that with the slightest contact shows that she was tiring.

And to the people who think Montano had a chance to be top three, you need to go back and watch. She went out too hard, was gassed and overstriding, almost doubled over, spending her last few ounces of energy to go as hard as possible with 150 to go. (I don't blame her, it's the shot at the Olympics after all.) If she hadn't hit Martinez, who was winding up to slingshot off the curve, she would have quickly fallen out the back door and staggered in at 2:05 or so.

I thought she was done at 600 but she obviously worked her way back into the race and may have caused the fall by doing so.

Watching the race several times and seeing how Kate Grace weaved her way to the lead, I dunno if she would have won if B-Mart had been able to stay with the leaders. B-Mart looked that strong, but FastK8 also looked pretty smooth and strong.

Kate Grace immediately moved from on the rail to the inside of lane two at the fall and did not hesitate to take the lead. She changed gears and was off. She was Rio bound regardless. She would've found a crease somewhere to get enough daylight to advance.

B-Mart was also finding another gear, she was on the outside ready to slingshot around with a clear line. That was her race to win.

To me, it was that third spot that would've been interesting - Ludlow, Wilson, Williams, and I guess even Montano but a lot of girls were passing her at 200m, would she find another gear?

Maybe A. Montano tying up is what caused the fall; muscles tying up, loss of focus, legs don't go where you want them. It's tough. I say B-Mart ends up making the olympics in the 1500.

She's just better trained, wants it too much, and has solid experience in the moment.

Everyone is engaging in conjecture in this thread because that is exactly what the OP invited. The better question is why the hell are you here complaining about conjecture in a thread that is very clearly focused on conjecture. A little slow are you?

Obviously, not unusual for Montano to take the field thru the first lap in 57.45 like she did.... but she did get swallowed up a bit right at the 600m mark. This field was more competitive than in recent years and the way that EVERYONE else jumped into another gear with 200 to go was impressive. Wish we could see some super slow mo video of this race from 600m on!

Martinez, Montano, Wilson take it to the line with Wilson taking it.

Martinez 4th

Montano 5th (she wasted too much energy running basically in lane 2 the entire race)

So, what you are saying is if the USA Olympic Trials final runners in event X has inferior runners to the favored medal contenders from rest of the planet, then the outcomes of the USA Olympic trials final in event X doesn't matter. So a trip, a foul, the tears, who makes the team, the training, the sacrifice, the hopes, the dream, the race itself..... It doesn't matter.
