Quick take here:
1) these regs are IAAF purview; USATF has no option but to disallow the mark
2) fault here rests with the meet director; Paul Doyle managed to have cheerleaders on the track but no curbing? a meet either meets technical specs or it doesn't
3) allowing Wade's time, or any of the times from races in question, opens up a can of worms; it's not personal in a case like this
In 2016, it's hard for me to believe what was a fairly major meet with Trials aspirants was actually staged on a meet without a curb. What the heck.
Do they have to have a rail when the water jump is on the outside of the turn? I have never seen that. I'm pretty sure people have gotten in with times on those tracks...

Nothing is going to change unless someone is willing to actually do something about it. I'm only an extremely small runner-fish in a very big pond, but the little I can, and have done, is to refuse to join such an inept, bundling organization as USATF. I personally refuse to support an outfit that consistently screws up and f*cks over the very athletes they're supposed to support.
This is so ridiculous and frustrating. I agree - demolish the whole USATF and start over from scratch.
Does everyone also remember when USATF disqualified the WRONG runner at Indoor nationals? Was it Bumbalough? Did it have something to do with Alberto Salazar? Was their some type of conflict with Jerry Schumacher?

Know what you're saying but do you really think any other IAAF members would even consider that a DQ. Its not like its some kind of record. Ever been to a national meet, say in Jamaica, Mexico, Ireland,or even Canada?
Don't lawyer up on this.
Its letting an athlete enter a pool of competition.

Yeah I understand their decision but they don't even have a full field anyway so just move on and let her run anyway would make sense
This year's new USATF guidelines for Team USA selection:
REMOVAL OF ATHLETES
An athlete who is to be nominated to the Team by USATF may be removed as a nominee for any of the following reasons, as determined by USATF:
...
Involuntary Withdrawal. An athlete who is named to the team by virtue of an error or oversight (by USATF) may be removed from the team at any time.
So USATF can be incompetent, but has written a legal excuse into team qualifying.

We have an update on the story.
1) Weldon spoke to David Katz. David says he never ever told Paul Doyle that it would be ok to run a meet without a rail.
Katz told Weldon that he spoke to Doyle after the article was published and that Doyle says he never told Flotrack that Katz told him it would be ok to run the meet with cones. Katz said Doyle told him that he told flotrack something along the lines of "You need to talk to David Katz" about how it all works.
Note: Earlier we said the Flotrack story was "inaccurately written". That is incorrect. The story does not accurately reflect what David said happened. We have no idea what Doyle actually told Flotrack so we definitely shouldn't say it's inaccurately written, but it's inaccurate to the facts according to David.

As an athlete, when invited to compete in a nationally televised meet, it's not on you to ask, 'Will there be a rail?' So Doyle screwed up but USATF could easily make this whole by just saying, 'We're going to make an exception as we want to reward you for getting a meet on natinal tv or we're going to penalize you .5 seconds per lap.'

There is no doubt if she were a Nike athlete that she would either:
1. Get into the meet with no issues, or
2. Get into the meet with no issues.
Seriously.
Also, same for Flotrack. Get your story straight before posting. Very unethical to run with content that puts words into people's mouths or that makes suppositions like this.
Yes they should let her in as a specific exception (if she appeals), but athletes have to take a more responsibility in matters like this also. They (and their agents, coaches, managers) need to read and understand the rules and make sure everything is good to go in advance.
Yes its hard enough training and living in order to be the best you can be, but if you want more than that you have to do more.
If you are going to a meet desiring to obtain a qualifying standard time, make sure everything is set up properly so your mark will be accepted. Ask the meet director.
If you want your mark to count as an American Record, make sure they will be doing drug testing.
If you want to qualify for Boston, make sure the course you run on to qualify is certified.
If you do not want to be disqualified for PED use, know what is not allowed and know what you are putting into your body.
If you do not want to be DQd, give other runners plenty of space when passing them.
As a career journalist I know that Flotrak ,letsrun, and Runners World are fanboys first and journalists second .

And how would you go about that? Measure the course yourself? What if your chip is defective and stops working halfway through?
Is it a steeple runner's responsibility to set up the hurdles in the proper place? How about making sure the timing system is working right before wasting a run?
If each lane does not need a rail for a 400 why does lane 1 need one?
