I just checked out the website. Cool idea. They have trail racing and mountain running championships as well. What's sad is that a former USA champ enrolled in a bible college just to take home a $1000 prize last year. If sponsored runners are entering into these races, I don't see the point
Amen to this. Way too many old men are doing this just to dip into prize money that is meant for collegians.

Even if Chelimo was on a full scholarship, he could accept the money as there is a lot of stuff that a scholarship didn't cover back then. Scholarships only recently have even been allowed to cover the "full cost of attendance" as explained here:

I feel this is borderline front page news. I am sure a link to a news write up will come soon, but Silas Frantz, who runs for UVA (formerly GTown) just won the Monument Avenue 10k in Richmond and walked away with $2000. The prize money was only for runners who are current taking classes at a US college. NJNYTC's Nicol Traynor won for the women.
Pretty cool that a guy who is likely on some percentage of a scholarship could walk away with a nice little pay day. Would love to see more top-flight collegians run these road and trail champs throughout the year.

Frantz isn't on the UVA team anymore. He got kicked off after he got a part-time job over winter break. UVA Athletics Director must be running a tight ship after he employed someone on a drug suspension, not taking any more chances with compliance.
