I'd probably feel comfortable going through 5k between 14:35-14:40.

Our new track coach had to move a lot of things around to get the funding for me to go this year. I also tried to run at Stanford last year, but there wasn't enough money in our budget to buy plane tickets. I don't know the details, I'm not a coach, but thanks for assuming I was lying about my financial situation.

Maybe they do, or don't deserve to get in, we will see on Friday night, however, I wouldn't say these six are outliers.

I ran 14:11 (last 2k alone) this winter and 29:39 last year. My name is Bijan Mazaheri if you want to look me up. We are considering running a 5k at San Franscisco Distance Carnival, if you would like to help build a fast race there.

I'm not sure how many other good people got left out of the race. It does screw over small schools with less funding when they do this. We already bought tickets for San Franscisco because the meet director originally said I would make it in.

Wow F Stanford. Bijan, you should be in that 10k. Incredible they would tell you you're going to run, make you pay for the flight and book the hotel, and then say you can't run.

Isn't the SF distance carnival already closed for entries?

It is a good meet btw and a great alternative to Stanford

Yeah, Tyler Day (NAU) ran that 14:54 (the one the OP mentioned) on a 200 meter flat track at 5000 feet altitude, which converts to a 14:22.

To be fair, they told us I was "in if nothing changes." I guess something changed. It does suck to be left out of a race that I've been trying to prepare for all year long. I actually beat at least one of the accepted athletes by a large margin last year at Princeton.

The SF 5k looks like it might be a good setup to break 14, so we have decided to go for that. Unfortunately, I've historically been much better at the 10k and geared my training towards it. I ran my 29:39 last year after a 14:27 in indoors, so I certainly think I am ready to challenge 29 if I can just get into a race.

If you spend 30 seconds reading about Williams (try googling "percent financial aid," you ass) you'd know that 50% of students receive aid. The fact that the endowment is enormous means not that the current students are wealthy. Sure, the track program can probably afford to buy an extra plane ticket but that's not relevant the the lovely ad hominen attack you levelled at Bichon.

Actually all "sesamoiditis" did was point out that Williams is has an endowment worth over $2 billion and is paying for their athlete to travel to and compete out at Stanford. Nothing about the athlete's situation, and certainly no attack at all. Those are merely statements of fact regarding the school's ability to send an athlete to a track meet.

correct me if i am wrong, but the fact that Bijan is from Wellesley is simply not relevant to the Williams program or endowment. I know it can be hard to make inferences sometimes but that's what is happening here.

So go out (or in as it were) and shock the world.

So what I'm gathering is that we should go for the 5k rather than the 10k? I'm entered in both so we hadn't decided which one to race yet.

That means they can do whatever they want. It is their meet. Put on your own meet if you want to have a different entry procedure. this is Not John Chaplin abjectly defying USATF (a public organization) rules by giving favors to cronies. I think you have this backwards. It's not entitlement if someone has run a faster time and has earned a spot. It is, however, entitlement when a Power Five conference athlete gets in simply because they are from a Power Five conference school.

And, they aren't doing what is best for their meet. It isn't best for their meet to deny faster runners and enter slower runners. They are doing what's best for their buddies and it is another example of why track & field is a declining sport.

I'd like to clarify that yes even though I said I go to a small school, I was referring to a small D1.

I'm surprised a D1 coach or someone who knows how this works hasn't responded yet...(btw I am not a division 1 coach or coach in college at all)

This is what happened -

Stanford invites teams to come to their meet (sort of). There are many racing options for those big schools that weekend, so in order for it to be worth those teams' time, they need to accept several of their runners. Not just one or two. Some coaches want to be there when their athletes race and not split up squads. Will slower runners from "invited" teams get in? Yes If their coach has a good reason to seed him at a time faster than his PR due to good faith, Stanford will accept it.

Maybe some coaches have more leeway with that than others.
