Could someone please enlighten me? I have been reading this forum for 3 years and I don't understand why Galen Rupp is so disliked. In all the interviews I have seen him give he has always seemed like a nice guy to me.

As a Nike shareholder I wonder why they spend even $1 on track and runners. Nike probably has a negative ROI. I have not heard many kids say I can't wait to get what Shalane or Galen are wearing. Face it the Nike target market is hobby joggers, as it should be and paying an athlete a mill a year or 500K just think how much they need to sell to make a return.

Results. Biiig results. He has now won how many titles? NCAA? USA? He's had/has how many AJR and US senior records? What color is his Olympic 10000 medal? He could have made US 1500 teams, and just won the marathon trials. Put simply, as a distance runner he IS MONEY.

Without Nike dollars in this sport, you would see and hear running events at about the same frequency as fencing, squash, cricket. Maybe even at the same frequency as equestrian events.

The target market may be hobby joggers, and that is a damn big market. Do you know how many hobby joggers out there? That's not including the folks who buy running shoes to walk on the tread mill or workout at the gym. The branding thing does work.
I wouldn't confuse the trolls on letsrun and build any meaningful percentage of those who hate him.
Same thing with all the DNS crap, he always comes ready to race when it matters, (US champs, worlds,olympics)

Spending money on branding to hobby joggers is one thing. Sponsoring professional athletes is quite another. I think the advertising money can be spent better, for example, using A-list celebs to promote Nike pegasuses. It is the Nike boards fiduciary responsibility to us shareholders to do what's in our best interest.
Again I ask, how many shoes do these pros sell? What is the ROI? Maybe it is Phils pet project.
