In any state with class meets, there is always the debate of who would win the team and individual if they faced each other in 1 big state meet. This is especially true if the smaller school has a hoosiers type season, or a once in a generation individual talent. In the days before national meets, the NY Feds, and the NJ MOC were legendary meets that allowed this to happen. The competition for "true" state champions led to outstanding and memorable performances, also comparable over years as the races have generally been at the same courses, Bowdoin and Holmdel. At the national level we now have this debate between the winners of Foot Locker and NXN as to who is the true national champion.
For teams and individuals that are not nationally relevant, these meets can still be the capstone to a season. For the nationally ranked teams, unfortunately these meets just become one more meet in a very busy schedule, and I can understand why a coach might want to skip to get in a last training block and a peak for NXR and NXN.
There has been some discussion at least in NY, where the state is an NXN region already, of merging Feds and NXN into 1 meet, but the block seems to be around prohibited corporate sponsorship of a high school meet, and the need for the teams to be "club" teams for the NXN meet, as technically for many schools the travel to a national meet is not sanctioned.
