I don't eat in Mickey D's too often, but I still remember the first time they served me one of their "new school" shakes with the clear dome lid and the whipped cream and the cherry. My reaction..."what the heck is this?" It was also a lot smaller than their former shakes. Bad tradeoff, IMO, for the 2-3 shakes of theirs I drink a year I want bigger and I don't care about no whipped cream! I had one recently and it didn't taste any different from what I remember from the last 45 years, no different texture (to me). Still good, not great.
The one product change in this area that really bummed me out was when Friendly's started using soft ice cream for their Fribbles.
I have had at least one a year for two decades plus. It's the same shake. You even still get that chocovanstraw flavor overtone regardless of what flavor you order.
Now they put whipped cream on it (good) and a cherry (gross). That's all that is different as far as I can tell and since I have, for better or worse, more data points than you, I'm right.
No it is not the same shake. They use reduced fat ice cream now. They did not used to do that. The original shakes were whole milk and hard ice cream.
Over the years they have lost the granular gritty shake and become a smoothie.
Some things are better before they were watered down.
The original McShake contained no ice cream which is why McDonald's never called it a "milk shake" - in some jurisdictions that requires that ice cream be present.
i'm an old dude who, in high school, over the summer of 1965, worked at the first mcDonalds in Worcester, Mass. The shakes were great! I made them! That was my 4 hour a day job. REAL ice cream+flavoring+coloring= what you remember...good or bad. Today...I throw up in my mouth as I pass a mcDonalds .It's all about Political Correctness and not a thing more. The difference between Mcdonalds 1965 and Mcdonalds 2015 is all about PC! And, of course, when you suck up to PC...in this realm, you're sucking up to how good or bad things taste and are nutritionally viable. If You're worried about nutritional values between said dates...maybe you should look elsewhere because trans fats and fried foods are pretty much BS when you look at those kinds of values, especially over time and in what quantity. I mean...correlational numbers are almost silly. For example: All people who eat carrots die.I mean..if you eat a shitty Mc donalds burger 2 or 3 times a month, do you REALLY think it's going to do you any harm? Really? Any more harm than running 20 x 400 at pace with 60 s jog?
Everyone seems to be talking about the shakes with the clear domed lid, but they still sell the standard shakes. I had one back in August after a 4-5 hr run in the mountains, and it was just what I needed - sweet, cold, thick ice textured liquid. It was my first shake from them in years, and didn't seem different from what they offered years ago. There was no whipped cream or cherry, and they were not offered either. I wouldn't say it tasted great, but it was good enough for what I wanted at that time.

Ok, I wanted to try the all-day breakfast today and went at 1:00pm to my local McD's. I asked for hash-browns. They said they didn't have hash-browns all day at this location? I'm not making this up.
They always tasted fake as hell to me. You know who makes the best milkshakes? I do. At home. With a blender. I'll take the Pepsi challenge with anyone. McDonald's, Cold stone, bring em on!
If anyone cares, the highest McDonald's in the world is in LLasa at 12,139. I believe in the US the one at Winter Park is slightly higher than the one in Silverthorne - both are over 9,000.
Chick fil a shakes are off the chain. Better food. Healthier choices. Best fast food service of all time. They also honor the Lords day. So not greedy. Give your life to Jesus not Ronald McDump.
