Yes, perhaps, but they would have to know about it first. They didn't drug test then like they do today.
Personally I have only heard one person ever allude to Pre's steroid use, my old college roommate. He had returned from running the Cinque de Milan cross country race (they used to let the Junior stay over and run this until around 1981) and claimed he had heard this from an extremely reputable source. (you all know him but I won't say unless this is bullshit). Basically this man said Pre was one of the first American runners to experiment with steroids)
It doesn't sound at all shocking or farfetched to me. About the same when I heard about Salazar.
I think that very few of us can understand the real temptation to go this route and get the extra edge. It's a whole different ballgame when you're dominating your country and can see the very real potential of being numbert one in the world. And you hear the rumors about the other men you are trying to beat.
A lot of names come to mind: Viren, Vaino, Cova, Antibo, Pannetta, Baumann. Those are some of the people you had to beat 20 years ago to be the best.
