Even if Stevie Wonder did a background check he could find Maric's suspension. But the university, the USTFCCCA, and the NCAA are all okay with this. BroJos, how about some calls to UVa?

Wrong. He was hired before the positive test and the suspension: "Two-time Olympian Martin Maric was named assistant track and field coach in September 2012."

He set his discus PB May 17, 2014, in Chula Vista, CA. He tested positive for Ostarine (a SARM) in July 2014 at the Croatian championships. And he still is a coach at UVa and was named USTFCCCA Southeast Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year.

Maric was hired in September 2012 and the positive drug test occurred in July 2014. A background check can't predict the future.

The regional coach honor is voted on by the coaches in that region. They either didn't know (unlikely) or didn't care (more likely) about the positive test. I'm not in that region, so I can't say.

He's obviously done a good job and in the end, head coaches are retained or fired based on results. Martin is a valuable part of the program. None of us know the internals that have taken place regarding this at UVA, but my guess is that it has been discussed. It is also very likely that if he had been released over this that he would have cause for legal action because it is irrelevant to his job performance.

Years ago, Clemson had a drugging scandal - prompted by the sudden death of a distance runner - that resulted in the resignation of the men's coach and the women's coach, the A.D., the head of campus police, and the president of the university.

So, Timmy, the lesson is that there can be other grounds for firing than low points at the conference meet.

Yeah, cheating to gain personal advantage IN THE SPORT YOU COACH doesn't make you or the university you represent look bad at all.

So cheating at NCAA level should be encouraged, but cheating at iaaf level taboo???

Two-time Olympian Martin Maric was named assistant track and field coach in September 2012. Maric works primarily as the Cavaliers’ throws coach.

Maric’s group had a stellar 2015 season, which earned him USTFCCCA Southeast Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year honors. He guided the throwers to six NCAA Championship entries during the outdoor season, as Jordan Young was the only male to compete in three individual events in Eugene. Young earned first-team All-America honors in both the discus and hammer throw, while Filip Mihlajevic finished third in the discus. The Cavaliers broke four school records during the outdoor season, with Mihlajevic setting the marks in the shot put and discus, Young in the hammer throw and Christine Bohan in the women’s shot put. During the indoor season, Young had a fourth-place finish in the weight throw at the NCAA Championships. Between the indoor and outdoor seasons, Mihaljevic and Young won a combined four ACC Championships.

In 2014, Maric coached Mihaljevic, the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year. Mihaljevic won the ACC Outdoor Championship in the discus and earned first-team All-American honors in both the shot put and discus.

Maric is the Croatian national record holder in the discus and he represented his home country in the discus at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 Games in London. He finished 29th in 2008 before placing 17th in 2012. He was named Croatian Athlete of the Year for this efforts in London.

He also represented Croatia at the 2011 World Championships in Dague, South Korea, and at the 2007 and 2009 World University Games.

At the University of California, Maric was the NCAA Champion in the discus in 2009, as well as an All-American in the discus in 2008 and the javelin in 2007.

Maric spent the springs of 2010 and 2011 as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Florida and served as an assistant coach at the ASK Split Athletic Club in his native Split, Croatia.

Maric graduated from California with a bachelor’s degree in political economy of industrial societies in 2009.

Both Littlepage and Fetzer are slimy - Fetz would absolutely hire someone he knew to have a doping ban if he thought he could get away with it. Birds like a feather flock together. Just look at their men's distance coach...

Other than the fact that you under-performed during your time at UVA, why do you have a beef with the current coaches? Please explain to me how Fetzer or Watson are slimy. Tough, focused, stingy, intolerant of BS... yes... but slimy?

It baffles me why people come on here and slam programs they (claim to) have been a part of.

Unfortunately I have little to say about the Maric situation other than I hope the rules were followed and it clears up quickly. Not all press is good press in cases like this.

Clearly the rules aren't being followed.

All of this is why, as the mother of a highly-recruited HS thrower, UVA was eliminated early and decisively from the list of potential schools for our daughter. She simply didn't want any association whatsoever with a banned thrower as a coach.

No need to bash the coaches here...most of us are so $%^@# busy trying to keep our own programs competitive we don't really have time to perform background checks on our opponents assistants.

Those votes are a joke anyway...no one participates. My region has 70-80 programs and the same dozen people vote every time. No one else cares.
