Can d1 mid/long distance runners complete seals training?

Like I said, every step is work. You will get some minor relief when you cross over the "Marshall Matting" if the course runs over it(?). I have never done Superfrog.

There is also a former NCAA 1500 finalist and sub 4 guy from a big 12 school that is in SEAL school. His former teammate at that school who was also an MD runner completed SEAL school.

There is no such thing as "SEAL School(?)."

There is the basic school "BUD/S" (Basic Underwater Demolition/ SEAL Training).

And there is the Qualification Course "SQT" (SEAL Qualfication Training).

Both must be completed to become a Navy SEAL.

Plenty of NCAA Division 1 athletes and even professional athletes have tried their hand at becoming a Navy SEAL. Some have met with success & others with failure. The attrition rate his high for a reason.

Ok, I used the wrong terminology but I think everyone got the point. One has completed training and is deployed. The other has just started.

Thank you for the great post and your service. As a university runner - mid-distance I followed up graduation with Basic Training and OCS at Fort Benning. The runner background helped out a lot. Having seen the Discovery Channel Seal Training DVD about Class 234 I don't think there is any way I would have been suited for seal training. It's just too extreme with all the non-stop physical rotations combined with little sleep and cold water immersion. What the seals do amazes me.

BUD/S does take those who participate far outside of their comfort zone.

FYI I went through "Airborne" at Benning. NSW now has its own static line and MFF course in San Diego, CA

so the new "meats" don't get that 3 weeks of "Navy Appreciation."

The "Black Hats" are probably relieved they no longer have BUD/S Grads in their school house.

You are more than welcome to pass the link along. The NSW training guide is geared toward a younger developing demographic. The biggest error made by teens is the lack of proper diet/nutrition and less than optimal recovery to develope a greater amount of physical strength.

Body weight exercises are the most ideal physical strength exercises for most teens vs. more complex and facility dependent free weight training.

Most Team Guys do both in addition to swimming (mostly with mask and fins utilizing the combat side stroke) and running. I do not know of very many Frogmen than run more than 20 miles a week after BUD/S. SOC Goggins being the exception and not the rule.

If an applicant makes it to a ST they have access to world class training facilities and trainers. We have the TAP Program (Tactical Athlete Program) which is founded in the API/EXOS training studies & philosophies. PHD's in exercise science and physical therapy are on staff at the NSW Commands on both Coast.

NSW is fully committed to the optimal performance of its operators and it spends a "Lions Share" of tax payer dollars on SEAL Operators.

I know 3 former D1 distance runners who are currently in the Teams - 2 enlisted and 1 officer. I also know several who have tried and failed. You cannot keep the distance runners' body if you hope to do well - In BUDs it's all about body weight strength and managing the cold water. The guys i know who made it gained about 30lbs from their college running weights, that was a couple years ago.

I do not know of very many Team Guys with a distance runners build. That build does not allow for a wide spectrum of resilience in austere environments. I have gained over 30 lbs of muscle mass since my time at BUD/S over a decade ago. Most TG's gain mass as a result of heavy load bearing and lifting. Wearing body armor + kit and doing "buddy carries" does require physical strength that a frail build of a competive runner isn't ideally suited for. Like I said in a previous post, most Team Guys have more of a college football player build as a result vocational necessity. A 1 dimensional runner type would be at a great disadvantage at BUD/S and in the SEAL Teams.
