but one thing everyone is missing in that thread and we missed as well in our article is Lagat tied the American record for 10k on the Words. Mark Nenow and Lagat are now the co-record holders. Thanks to David Monti of Race Results Weekly for pointing this out.

I didn't think Lagat would go sub 28:00 so I never thought to look up the American 10k record. Considering there are tons of 10k every year on the roads, and a 10k US championships it is amazing Lagat at age 40 got the American record.

TT/net has a pretty vocal group of posters that think the selfserving timing of his change of citizenship declaration and suspected use of PEDs make him unworthy of comment... but I also was shocked that no one commented on the US Road Record as Nenow is well liked by a number of board members, myself included.

Rupp should be sh!tting himself right now.

Lagat has now shown more than enough strength to handle a 10,000 at championship paces.

In a jogfest like the London 10,000 Lagat would murder Rupp.

I disagree. Rupp would murder Lagat, just like he did at the 2012 Olympic Trials 5000m.

I don't think Kip could handle Rupp over 10000 on the track. As well, I don't think he'd come close to sub 27. Maybe 27:25 ish at best and even that would surprise me a bit.

Putting his age aside, Lagat ran a 13:06 5K last year and a 3:54 mile indoors just a few months ago...why is this results so surprising. If decides to run USATF's, Rupp will be his problem in the 5K or 10K. Lagat is certainly on the downside of his career, but you have to remember how high the upside was.

No comment on (1) but with regards to the others.....

2. The Half was a shock to his system mainly because it was so cold and windy at the start (-1 Celsius in Central Park at 8am). He'd be 'worth' something like 61:00-61:30 but doesn't do enough mileage to run 60-flat. Separate issue he came from Tucson; getting up 3:30 NY time to get some food (doesn't like to eat within 4 hrs of running) wasn't easy! It was a tough run, faded last 5km and made him give up any thoughts of a marathon at some stage.

2. Carlsbad was very hot this year not conducive to running fast, neither is the course with its turns;

3. Komon always goes to front first mile and gets it rolling Sambu and Sth African kept it going.......

It will be exciting to see new masters records. I think many of the records by Lagat's age and my age group 45-49 are too soft. Too many quit fighting hard enough when they turn 40 or even before that. If you have to change your training like some do then don't be frightened away by it.

For me I had to do quite a lot of 4 X 3000 or 4 X 2 miles at a slower pace than I was used to running with 1 minute recovery jogs in order to gain strength. I had never run repeats that long until I was 40. I think too many masters start doing less like the miler who used to run 12 to 16 X 400 but now only runs 8 X 400. The miler probably needs to do something different than downsize to better records.

But everything has to balance out right too. The day after I ran a 4 X 2 miles was probably a short bike ride, light weight session of upper body only and an hour of walking and some other types of body work to keep strong and balanced.

I wonder how much Lagat has done differently over the last year or two to prepare for over 40.

John Trautmann lost the drive for many, many years. After turning age 45 John renewed his drive and came back in epic fashion.
