Fly,
Do your PRs go along these lines?
800m 1:59
1500m 4:04
mile 4:22
3k 9:01
2 mile 9:38
5k 15:34
8k 26:09
Hi trackhead,
Very close! You guessed my 1500m exactly, give or take a few seconds on the rest of them. Are those your PR's or perhaps somebody else you know?
Thanks to all who had responded.
Fly,
Those are the PRs of someone with 52 second quarter speed who is an 'A' type runner -- who has more ability in speed and less in endurance.
Most people are 'A's until they really start packing on the miles. B's are in between, where their abilities in speed and endurance are more or less equal, and 'C's are runners who have maxed out their speed.
I took your quarter time and put it into the computer and it gave out these times and I guessed you were an 'A' runner.
Check out what your potential is:
Thanks trackhead,
That chart is pretty cool and I appreciate it. I saved it and will print it out and put it on my wall for inspiration. Definitely want to at least hit the type "B" times before I hang up the racers for good.
My HS coach told me that since I didn't have a good kick, I had to get ahead earlier in the race. I usually got outkicked at the end if someone was close. My college coach told me to stay right behind the person until the final straightaway. DOn't pass on the turn. Wait until you are coming off the turn and when you pass it will be too late for the person to respond. You will have more desire when you see the person in front of you. I almost never got outkicked in college with this strategy. So its two things: believe in your kick and don't go too early.
Run to your potential. Put in the miles, keep the volume of intenisty at 20% or less and follow the advice that JK posts on this board. Volume doesn't kill guys -- intensity does.
Don't just shoot for medicority -- run to run with the best. You know what you're ultimately capable of -- now do it.
My leg speed is atrocious. My 400M PR is 57.8". However, I would outkick much faster runners (5K). My kick would start right at the bell lap, routinely a 61 second last 400M, which isn't bad for a 5K and pretty exhausting for me. My logic was that if someone could go 59-60 seconds and beat me, then that was what they would have to do.
As far as I am concerned, the 'gutty' kickers are better closers than the naturally fast ones.
