Giving up things that he usually eats could easily make him a worse runner just by upsetting his mental sanity.

Wejo is correct. Maybe it's something that made his life enjoyable and allowed him to train hard, knowing that he could indulge a bit. These things aren't black and white, cut and dry. Life has to be worth living.

No they are not unhealthy. All these alarmist claims designed to sell fad diets! You know best look at all the athletes who enjoy foods their body craves and they perform at such high levels. The real science says eggs are good for you and fish poultry and steak all have great nutrient profiles, high quality protein and essential fatty acids.

E.g. look at girls scout cookies, from their website:

Other bad news in girls scout cookies are:
wheat, soy, sugar, peanuts
He would have been able to recover so much better with a healthy diet. He would have been much more lean and skinny as well.
