Wow, 45th place 24:20...my PR. Man, the kid who did it was 18 at the time too.
I won my PR race by a ton too. Puts things into perspective.
I don't think it's a stretch to say people were tougher back then. Tougher and they trained a lot more. And more guys kept at it for longer than now and weren't afraid to race road/XC/track. Pretty impressive.

People were not tougher then. Some were very tough which is true now. People perhaps raced more often though.

Lots of very fast runners back in that period of time... and we were all doing it for little to no money... still not sure why but it sure was fun!
I recall in Running Times (I think, anyway), a photo of Malcolm East and like half his team running some marathon. It said Allegheny on his singlet.
I don't know when he went to school, but the cutline for the photo said something about team, or off-season. Whoever above was questioning about college athletes running marathons for the heck of it, and going pretty fast, it happened. A lot. We ALL ran loads of races, track, XC, indoor, didn't matter. Heck, in high school, my junior and senior year, I ran something like 50 races NOT in season.

Malcom East won the 1977 JC nationals in cross country. All other claims in this thread do not comport with the timeline.
There were more short courses back then(circa Saladbar's WR in New York). Also there was no drug testing then and you could get away with blood doping and who knows what else was going on. Another easy thing about back then was less pollution and traffic to slow you down and disrupt training.

From the masters news clips, looks like the times were local class the next year ('84) so probably one of those races that had the big money for one year and not much of a history otherwise.
Ken Young must have the full race results in the database for '83 and we really do need to know who finished 1 through 6.
Filbert Bayi ran for UTEP 1983 and U. Oklahoma 1984.

Finally an answer to the age old debate over why distance road runners from the 70s and early 80s were SO much faster than today!! Brilliant! Malcolm East who lived in Pittsburgh many years had less pollution to run in back then vs. today. I love it! AND less traffic to slow him down and disrupt his training. It's a wonder why they weren't even faster.
A race back when men were men and women were women. We simply cannot have results like this anymore with all of the gendered bending going on from soy (fake) milk/veganism/liberalism. Now women will compete in the men's category and men will compete in the women's category and women will compete in the men's category and vice versa. How long until 23 year olds can compete in the 18 year olds category?
