On a percentage basis, how many athletes who play collegiate basketball or football make the jump to professional sports? Probably a comparable percentage to those in track.
An athlete running well, but not quite world class, can use his talent to get his education paid for. It's the education that is the reward. Many of these athletes have an excellent work ethic and drive. When combined with an education, that gives them a potent skills set in the business world.
While making the jump to professional runner and 3:36 1500 runner is admirable, getting the college degree paid for and then parlaying it into a solid career isn't a bad second prize.
