Correct me someone if I'm wrong, but in the years 1980, 1984, and 1988 weren't the qualifying times based on the 100th fastest time by an American run from one Boston Marathon to the next, OR during the calendar year prior to the Olympic Trials year?
you don't actually know me/who I am - do you?
I don't know who you are without a name. When/where did we race each other in the past?
Bob
some on here (a few) know my name - don't normally mention it. Did you you run Cal JC late 60s? I'm/was So Cal guy - in the day

Okay,
I think we now have the standards established:
1968 no standard
1972 2:30
1976 2:23
1980 2:23
1984 2:19:04
1988 2:20?
1992 2:20
1996 2:20-2:22
2000 2:20-2:22
2004 2:20-2:22
2008 ?
I can vouch for the standards from 1984 on. (And yes, the standard in 1988 was 2:20:00.) To answer an earlier question, the 1984 standard was based on the 100th-best time of 1982, which is why it was the only standard that wasn't a round number. The first opportunity to qualify for the 1984 trials was the 1983 BAA Marathon, which was part of the reason that so many good American runners showed up at Boston that year.
