Should The High Jump Be Changed?

Maybe they can make the long jump more like the high jump...one would need to jump past a certain bar on the ground, and the bar is increased incrementally until the weaker ones fall off and the final person is declared the winner.

The long jump is a little more pure, if you hit a Beamon it will go down. There is wind and foul. (I like putting a giant windbreaker behind the runway, although it will block some audience, as for fouls mark their take off point within a jumping "zone")

But for High jump you are stuck where the bar is. Maybe something like how they measure vertical leap. I dunno, but it's frustrating to think that the high leap ever is not recorded. Any ideas?

well here's a video of what they claim is a 3.12 meter jump (10.25 feet) by a tumbler. Can't tell what the floor is like - if it is springy or has a trampoline or if it is actually 3.12 meters in the first place.

I'm pretty sure a gymnast could beat the standard WR by quite a bit - but I have no proof.

He went off of a spring board. You can see it at the end of the run up. Impressive jump, though

If 10' were remotely possible, someone would be cashing in on it you'd see it discussed here and other track websites. In fact, a guy cleared a little over 7' a long time ago (possibly on a "sprung" floor). and I guess it garnered quite a bit of noteriety for the national champion tumbler.

I've tumbled on a wide variety of surfaces and even a primative sprung floor that gets its bounce from dense foam blocks is way, way more forgiving than a hard surface.

Sometimes you seem smart.

Other times though...

The wall of beams is a good idea, but it wouldn't work because of the location of the heels often coming underneath the crossbar during the rollover.

The event is pretty cool now. This is one reason why more people flock to HJ and PV than LJ and TJ at track meets.

Maybe this guy is an olympic gymnast, but I doubt it.

So if mr. gymnast dude here can clear a WR level height in his spare time - imagine what a world class olympic gymnast or one of those professional chinese acrobats could do off two feet.

I know he is jumping off some kind of springy surface, but it doesn't look like the bouncy boards they use for floor activities in gymnastics - just looks like soft pads.

It goes carpet on top, foam, plywood, and springs under that.

Wow, the first HJ thread without metric measurements. Oh yeah!

i realise the rules were changed to allow lj's and hj's with a run-up, as that is more of a visual spectacle, more spectacular.

sometimes though, i would like to see a lj or hj competition, only allowing a standing start.

be interesting to see who has "go go gadget"like legs (inspector gadget, a cartoon detective, who had spring in his legs)

You don't have to put beams all the way down, just within the jumping zone of the competitors. It could be 1 foot.

I don't jump, but I wonder if a beam would provide enough visual cueing to the jumper. Not having a bar to jump over could be difficult. Have any jumpers here ever tried a serious jump without the bar? I like the poster's idea about bar for dough, laser for show.

ok, if you're gonna let high jumpers use springboards, I propose to make the entire track a big 400-meter oval trampoline. I'm not sure if anyone would go faster like that but I'd sure like to find out.

This is a Norwegian decent standard gymnast and is not jumping off some kind of a springy surface. If I am not wrong the program where the youtube clip comes from also had the same gymnast doing a regurlar high jumpi at about 180 cm, eq. to aprox. 6 feet.
