If my score is 133, is this above or below average?
If you got that score on one of the many online IQ tests, then don't believe it - you're average at best. Those things give you an inflated score and then hope that you PAY for the more detailed report about how smart you are. It's all a bunch of crap.
They get circulated here at work sometimes, and I've scored as high as 181 on one of them. Now, I'm no dummy, but I don't have an IQ of 181 either.

Thanks, I thought it was because I still breast feed
IQ tests don't really measure intelligence...Seriously, you think that a test that asks you about your spatial, verbal, and mental reasoning is valid than you got some serious issues going on there...IQ tests don't measure intelligence, your intelligence does...And as far as I know of, no one in the field has ever really came up with a fantastic and valid way of actually measuring someone's intelligence...
IQ tests, I believe, have an average of 100 with a standard deviation of 15.
What that means is that half will score above 100 and half below (in general...technicaly that's the def. of median). 34% will score between 100 and 115 and an additional 13.5% will score between 115 and 130.
A score of 133 puts you in about the 97 percentile.
HOWEVER, as already stated, an accurate IQ score can only be measured by a psychologist. One of the factors that is not usualy measured by self administered tests is the speed in which you respond.....whoch is one of the main things that is to be tested. People with higher IQ's typically figure out problems quicker.
Also note that an IQ...or rather "Inteligence Quotient".... doesn't really tell you how "smart" you are. It only measures two of the eight inteligences and can favor someone who spends alot of time playing with puzzles. All a high IQ really tells you is that you can figure out how to solve abstract puzzles in a relatively short amount of time.
I typicaly score higher on IQ tests than many of my friends. However, I happen to be strong in the areas of logic, spacial geometry, and abstract thought....all of which make me a good engineer. However, many of these friends who have "lower" IQs are much better read than I am. They have higher reading speeds and better reading comprehension which allows them to accumuate more "knowlege" in a given amount of time....yet this is not measured in an "IQ test." This would explain why many of them could not pass calculus yet....though calculus came easy to me...I earned a D in my ancient history class.
However, in spite of all this, some people are just plain smart and others are just plain dumb.
If you crack open any psych book, you will see there are many definitions of intelligence. The real iq tests does measure your verbal, problem solving abilities, etc. What else do you expect? How do you think a pen and paper test is going to measure your street smarts? For those of you who bash iq tests, how many of you have actually taken one?
