The amount of effort and brutal regime that put Komen between 1996-1998, although that regime was his success key, was also his own letal weapon.
By 1999 he was burned out.
Now, the most successful coaches have other priorities, like focusing in long term health, recovery, peaking only in major-non rabbited races (some of them with poor wheather conditions). And that's for me, the biggest wall in finding the next 7:20'er. (also there's not enough money on the line for fast-loaded 3000m fields.
Caleb Ndiku Is the only athlete from this decade with the potential for a 7:23.xx.
Even El G was significantly slower. Haile, Kennster and Mo were miles away from that bestiality.
And finally, Im not buying that Komen didn't know anything about splits, strategy or even to wear watches in practice.
