Mo Farah Breaks 60 in the Great North Run!!! Great race, Sprint finish between Mo and Kigen.

8:07 two mile and 60:00 half marathon within two weeks of each other is pretty impressive.

That Farah definitely can run faster over 5000m and 10000m than he has is unimportant for the question: he has to do it.

Except that his 6th place is over 1500m, which he hardly ever raced since getting good.

What he ought to do next year is spend a few weeks next season committing to the 1500m, with a couple of 5000s to keep up the cash flow, and a couple of 800s just for a laugh. It might go better than marathons.

No it's not. Every 8:07 guy should be able to run 60:00. These guys are running 80+ mpw.

Seb Coe and Steve Ovett ducked each other for their entire careers.

He won the Olympics and WC five times. He does race Diamond league but maybe not that many races. He raced Kiprop in a 1500 and the world's best in a marathon. He has not made record attempts. All that means is that he is not on the level of Bekele. Noone argues that. It is absurd to say he ducked competition.

He is not an all time great. He has no world records or even record attempts. He has not beaten anyone that is a great runner (unless they are injured or out of shape). He doesn't participate in the Diamond League. He avoids competition.

I totally agree. Kigen put on the brakes multiple time in the last few miles of the race to allow Farah to catch up. Really odd race. Here is a link for those who haven't seen it.

Racing Kiprop is the most competitive thing he has done and it was a great move, but he did not race the worlds best in the marathon. It was a paid appearance by contract. He didn't even show up in shape. That the world's best was there had nothing to do with it. It was all about money.

He does not participate in the Diamond League. Part of being a great competitor is participating and showing longevity over the course of a full season. He only participates when he thinks he is sure to win.

Instead of competing regularly against the best or the clock, he runs these very slow times and sits and kicks. Didn't he have a 5k this summer that was somehow even slower than the slow 10k he ran? But then he won't compete against Ndiku and the rest? That's what Mo's critics are talking about.

It's fine if that is what he wants to do, but the problem is that he is also trying to pass himself off as the best runner of all time and it's not true and he knows it. That's what the problem is.

Yeah, just watched it. Other posters are dead on. The announcer said something along the lines, can he do it? Can Mo Farah become the "first British athlete to win the great north run since 198x...."

This was not a bonafide race on par with what happened between him and Bekele, that's for sure. But whatevs

Kigen was clearly paid his appearance fee to assist \ pace Farah. Farah probably got him into the race and a nice fee. This was a case of a pacer being stronger than they expected and being right there until the final stages of the race. He then thought as the pacer he better not beat Farah. I think it highly unlikely they made an agreement before the race that Kigen was not allowed to win. How did they know how the race would pan out. Kigen made the decision for himself. Farah probably believes what he is saying that he won a hard fought race. There is no way they would withhold someone's appearance fee because he won the race.

The field was weak and set up for Farah to win but others have done this numerous times. Think Coe and Ovett not racing, Bolt not racing Blake etc etc. I personally find races set up for Farah to win boring. At least Rupp tries to run fast when a race is set up for him. I don't have any problem with him winning championship races like that though.

Race was sponsored by Puma, so don't think we can blame this one on Nike.

I did watch the whole race and it was a joke. Kigen got a gap on Mo numerous times over the last few miles and was clearly slowing and looking back for Mo to catch back up. He also didn't contest the sprint with Mo.

He let Mo go when he kicked with 200m to go, then caught right back up to him in the last 50m or so, but made no effort to even try to get by.

I have been watching athletics for 20+ years and this was not a race!

I watched the race in the gym jogging on a treadmill (age plus achilles/quad/knee problems prevent anything else!) and it looked a bit "off" to me. Kigen dropped Farah acouple of times but then slowed and Farah caught up. Of course it could be that Kigen could not maintain his pace and Farah was simply being smart and ignoring the surges and running even pace - but it didn't appear that way. And, yes, I am aware that watching on TV does not always give the best impression of what goes on during a race. The final few hundred meters did not have the appearance of an "all out war" either and Kigen's attitude immediately after the race suggested the man who felt he had done his job very well rather than an athlete devastated at having lost an important race!

First class running by both men, no doubt about that, but a genuinely competitive event? Doubts remain!
