Dunedin gets below zero in the winter at night a bit, snow on the ground of about an inch twice a year at most. Not many days don't get above 10 degress in winter.

...or for counselors and teachers?
Tauranga= Great place, probably my 2nd fav place in New Zealand. great beaches, a big enough town to have and alright night life, beautiful area. Probably the only downside is that it doesnt have an all weather track(im pretty sure it doesnt neway).
West Auckland's suburbs are probably 20mins traffic free drive to Auckland university. honestly West auckland is a great place for running, theres like a bizzilion trails thru the native bush and nice beaches and it aint too far fro Auckland city etc, we have great training facilities here now after opening a massive stadium with great facilities and an all weather athletics track etc.
Tinman, im sure we could find space for someone of your knowledge down here. HRE trust me mate there is loooadds of positions for teachers down here.

Twenty five or so years ago Arthur Lydiard told me the same thing. Then it turned out there weren't many openings. I would have moved then if there had been loads of openings. Maybe I'll have to reconsider the idea now.
When I was there in 1991 you had the most vicious seagulls I'd ever encountered. They were especially bad in Nelson. I think I got dived bombed there on every run I did. Is that common or was it personal?
Must of been personal haha, a good guided rock would keep them at bay for a few minutes next time.
But seriously, i think Kim would be able to answer best as he is a teacher, but going from my own school where there is loads and i mean absolutely loads of foreign teachers because of the lack of NZ teachers. I mean i can only speak from experience at my school, but schools seem to be screaming out for permanent teachers and male teachers especially as there seems to be a shortage of them.
This question is for americans that have travelled to NZ, or anyone who knows:
I know we don't need a visa, but after looking over the NZ immigration website, I'm not sure if we need anything else. Do we need a "permit" or anything besides a passport and a plane ticket?
thanks everyody
Are you sure you don'y need a visa? I know you need a student visa, so I think you would need a regular one as well.
Bottom line is NZ is a great place to live, run, visit, etc. No you don't need a visa to visit. You can go for three months before having to leave the country or else you must have a sponsor, a work visa, a student visa or get married. Of course you can always just fly over to Australia at the end of the three months and then come back for three more months.
At one point I picked up a handful of small stones and tossed them. It worked well, sort of a shotgun effect. But then I felt bad and learned that as long as I turned around and faced them they took off. I'm guessing it was nesting season. But maybe it was personal.
I'll be visiting the South Island with another trail runner Jan 20-Feb 6; we'll be based in Dunedin and branching out from there. We're hoping to find a trail race or two to enter, and of course plan to run parts of the Great Walks and other lovely routes. We welcome suggestions, web links, and contact info for clubs or helpful individuals.
I'll be in New Zealand from 14 March 2005. Flying into Christchurch, having a look round the South Island and then running the Great Forest Marathon near Wellington on 2 April. What chance a 10k or half marathon somewhere on weekend of 20/21 March ? Most of the racing calendars on web I've looked at are hopelessly out of date for NZ. Anybody got an NZ magazine ?
Leave your e-mail up. I've had club guys contact me directly. Very nice and helpful people. It's hard with the time difference for them to communicate with you.

to get a sense of the Wellington running scene... I run for Wellington, but have to admit Scottish has the best site. Email me when you get to Wellington and I'll give you some info about local runs/races.
