My issue lies with men (gay or straight) who feel threatened by beards and prefer that other men do not have them. Oddly enough, I am clean shaven.

Several things:
1) I have never actually met a man who was "threatened" by a beard. Especially since the greater proportion of females prefer men who are clean-shaven.
2) The only reason any male is probably glad Leer shaved off his beard is because it made him look like a neanderthal. I mean, let's just think about this for a moment. You rarely see a man who isn't clean-shaven on live TV, most famous actors are clean-shaven, most individuals in a professional setting are clean-shaven, etc.
In a way, it's the same reason so many of the people on this board disliked Galen Rupp from the moment he became a high school star. They didn't like the idea of American runners being represented by a pale, skinny, nerdy and awkward looking kid. In Leer's case, a substantial proportion of people don't like the idea of American runners being represented by a man who looks like a combination of a lumberjack and a caveman.
It's really only a small subset of people who are "enthralled" with his beard, and even then, the majority of that subset just wants him to keep it because it looks so ridiculous that it's entertaining.

Most of the players from the NBA Finals (LeBron, Wade, Ginobili, Duncan, etc.) all sported beards. The Red Sox team that won a World Series last year had a team full of beards. Clearly, there are more clean-shaven than bearded people, but saying that Leer is some type of freak minority for having a beard is just false.
The wind resistance from that monstrous growth prevented him from lowering his mile PB below that of Ryun's historic 3:51.1.

OP, all historical male figures worth respecting maintained some sort of facial hair. The exception is colonial/independence times, where facial hair briefly went out of fashion (think George Washington). You're merely experiencing what's buried in most individuals' subconscious: your beard is what makes you a real man.
Dudes respect you. They'll do stuff for you because they see you as someone to look up to and gain traction with. They also notice the 'alpha'-rays that your beard emits, and those with freshly-shaven baby faces are particularly vulnerable to feeling inadequate when exposed to the radiation (or radiance) of your beard.
Women notice it too. Your full, thick beard marks you as an ideal specimen whose genes would combine nicely with hers to create robust and sturdy offspring. Further, your beard represents a warm place to snuggle her head against during cold winter nights in a cave - though she wouldn't be able to identify it as such and merely thinks, "gee, what a sexy fvcking man." It's not surprising that your wife despises the beard. She understands that it makes you attractive to other suitors, and should one come along that find more suitable for sex, she may be out of a mate. She will try at all costs to get your to shave it - via insults, force, etc. Be wary. Her friends are confused. They see your beard and are attracted to it, yet they must defend their friend and her beliefs. This is dangerous because their attraction will build until they can't resist any longer...
So, yes, you can shave it off if you like, but you can no longer rely on ignorance to get you through your journey. You know that real men have beards, and pu$$y betas have baby shaven faces.
